MANCHESTER, N.H. – Brittany Shields totaled 24 points and 14 rebounds as Pace University edged Southern New Hampshire University 58-55 in a key Northeast-10 women's basketball contest Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Setters, who entered the day tied for second in the league standings, are now 13-3 and 10-2 in NE-10 play, while the Penmen, who now sit in a tie for fourth, saw a five-game win streak snapped and are now 14-4 and 9-3 in the league.
Shields finished 9-19 from the floor to lead three Setters in double figures. Carol Johnson finished with 14 points, while Maral Javadifar added 11.
Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) led Southern New Hampshire with her second-straight double-double, recording 23 points on 10-16 shooting while also grabbing 12 rebounds. Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) was the other Penmen played in double figures, as she totaled 12 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
The second half was a see-saw affair that saw nine ties and 10 lead changes and neither side leading by more than three points. Following the game's 13th tie on a pair of free throws by Shields at the 4:43 mark, the Penmen took the lead on a pair of Duffy free throws with 4:13 remaining to make it 55-53. Pace would take the lead for good on a three by Margo Hackett with 3:38 left, and extended its lead to 58-55 with 3:08 to go on a layup by Johnson.
Pace ran off over a minute on its final possession, the beneficiary of a pair of offensive rebounds. Shields would be fouled with 28 seconds left, but missed the front end of a one-and-one, with Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.) grabbing the rebound. Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) attempted a game-tying three as time expired from the top of the key, but her attempt was blocked by Javadifar.
The game's first nine minutes saw six lead changes and four ties, but the guests used a 9-0 run to build a 19-12 lead with 6:50 to go before halftime on a Shields. The Setters took their largest lead, 24-16, with 3:58 left on a Shields three-point play, but the Penmen closed out the half on an 11-4 run and a Sorrell basket 43 seconds before the break would send Pace to the locker room with a 28-27 lead.
Both teams grabbed 36 rebounds, with Pace shooting 41.8% for the game and Southern New Hampshire an even 40%. Pace was 10-18 at the free throw line, while the Penmen were 9-14. The Setters were able to generated a 13-4 advantage in second chance points.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Adelphi University for a 1:30 contest.
