NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sylvonya Moore finished with a career-high 30 points as Southern Connecticut State University topped Southern New Hampshire University 66-60 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Wednesday night at Moore Fieldhouse. The Owls extended their win streak to 13 games and improved to 15-3 and 12-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 15-5 and 10-4 in the league.
Moore finished 12-15 from the floor and was the lone Owl in double figures. Moni Smith-Ocran and Alex Fiola each finished with nine points, with Fiola knocking down a trio of three-pointers.
Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) paced Southern New Hampshire with 20 points, going 7-9 from the floor and 6-7 at the free throw line. Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) totaled 15 points and eight assists, while Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls N.H.) tossed in a career-high 13 points, finishing 6-8 from the floor. Duffy moved into second place on SNHU's all-time assist list, and now is 22 shy of the school record of 546.
Southern Connecticut led 45-35 five minutes into the second half, but SNHU used a 12-4 run to pull within two, 49-47, with 8:51 left on a conventional three-point play by Spanarkel. The Owls countered with a 5-0 spurt and a three by Fiola with just under eight minutes left made it a 54-47 game.
Southern New Hampshire would cut the lead to three two times down the stretch, the last time with 3:44 left on a Chelsea Dunham (Johnson, Vt.) basket. SCSU scored the game's next four points and maintained at least a two-possession lead the rest of the way.
The Penmen scored the game's first five points, but Southern Connecticut reeled off 18 unanswered points and a Fiola three 12:09 before halftime gave the Owls a 13-point lead. Southern New Hampshire chipped away at the lead and got it down to five, 27-22, 1:36 before halftime on a Duffy basket, but the hosts held a 32-24 lead at intermission.
SNHU shot 51% from the floor and outrebounded Southern Connecticut 36-30, but finished 1-9 behind the arc and committed 26 turnovers. The Owls shot 44.3% overall and knocked down five of their 13 three-point attempts.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts American International College in a 1:00 Northeast-10 contest.
