MANCHESTER, N.H. – Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) matched a career high with 17 points off the bench as Southern New Hampshire University posted a 60-43 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over American International College Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen improved to 16-5 overall and 11-4 in the NE-10 with the victory, while the Yellow Jackets are now 8-11 and 7-8 in the league.
Wiseman finished 5-9 from the floor and 7-9 at the free throw line to lead three Penmen in double figures. Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) notched her fourth double-double in the last five games with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) (pictured) added 10 points. Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.), the NCAA Division II leader in assists entering Saturday, recorded seven assists, while Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) grabbed 10 rebounds.
Michelle Lafond knocked down a trio of three-pointers and led American International with 11 points, while Alyssa Roach added 10 points.
AIC trailed 26-24 at halftime but took a 29-28 lead 3:26 into the second half on a Lafond three-pointer. The lead was short-lived as Duffy nailed a three on SNHU's next possession to take the lead for good. Her trifecta was the start of an 8-0 Penmen run capped by a DeRoma three at the 12:41 mark that gave the hosts a 36-29 lead.
Southern New Hampshire extended the run to 16-2, with a steal and layup by Rocha at the midway point of the frame gave her team a 44-31 lead. The Yellow Jackets pulled within eight, 47-39, on a Lauren Griffith basket with just under six minutes to go, but from there the Penmen closed out the game on a 13-4 run and led by as many as 19 down the stretch.
SNHU jumped out to a 15-5 lead six minutes into the game following a conventional three-point play by Wiseman, but American International used a 12-0 run to reclaim the lead, 17-15, with 8:46 left before halftime on a three by Lafond. The Penmen countered with a 9-0 run of their own and went up 24-17 with 3:46 left on a Rocha basket. The Yellow Jackets outscored Southern New Hampshire the remainder of the half and went into intermission down two, 26-24.
The Penmen limited AIC to just 29.1% shooting for the contest while shooting 46% from the floor. Southern New Hampshire outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 41-30 and took nine more trips to the free throw line, going 10-17 while American International was 7-8 at the stripe.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to crosstown rival Saint Anselm College for a 5:30 contest.
