UMass Lowell Upends Women's Basketball

MANCHESTER, N.H. – UMass Lowell used a balanced attack to upset Southern New Hampshire University 60-48 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The River Hawks, who avenged an earlier 58-40 loss to the Penmen, improved to 8-14 and 6-11 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are 17-6 and 12-5 in the league.

Sha'Nay Bushner finished with a double-double for the guests, totaling 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Danielle DePierro recorded 12 points and five rebounds, while Bianca Simmons added 10 points.

Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) paced Southern New Hampshire with 16 points and 14 rebounds.  Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) totaled six points and eight rebounds, while Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.), Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) and Megan Smith (Smithfield, Maine) all added six points apiece.  Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) handed out five assists and is now two assists shy of the program record of 546.

Southern New Hampshire led 22-21 at halftime and 24-21 early in the second half before UMass Lowell went on a 12-0 run capped by a Sarah Bennett basket with 15:49 left to  take a 33-24 lead.  The River Hawks took a 39-29 lead at the 14:27 mark.

The Penmen used a 6-0 spurt to claw their way back, with a conventional three-point play by Duffy with 10:51 left making it 43-40.  UMass Lowell countered with a 8-0 run and a pair of free throws by Brianna Wilson with 7:42 left gave the guests a 51-40 lead.  The River Hawks maintained at least a nine-point advantage the rest of the way.

UMass Lowell took a 9-2 lead four minutes into the game, but the Penmen used a 10-3 run to take a 12-11 lead with 8:09 left before halftime on a Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.) basket.  The two teams traded the lead six times the rest of the way, with a three-pointer by Smith at the buzzer giving the hosts a 22-21 lead.

The River Hawks knocked down five of their 12 three-point attempts and shot 33.3% for the game while the Penmen shot 34% for the game.  SNHU held a 44-35 rebounding advantage, but 29 Penmen turnovers led to 23 UMass Lowell points.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Franklin Pierce University for a 5:30 contest.
