Box Score WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) totaled 25 points and had the game's final three points as Southern New Hampshire University rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to stun the University of New Haven 72-71 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. The Penmen won their second straight to improve to 8-7 and 5-6 in the NE-10, while the Chargers are now 6-9 and 5-6 in the league.
Sorrell recorded her ninth double-double of the season as she also grabbed 11 rebounds while shooting 11-18 from the floor. Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) was 4-8 behind the arc and totaled 14 points, while Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Anh-Dao Tran led New Haven with a career-high 30 points, going 11-16 from the floor and 4-6 behind the arc. Aquillin Hayes and Briana Bradford each scored 11 points for the Chargers.
Southern New Hampshire, which trailed 58-43 with 10:25 remaining and 68-56 with just over five minutes left, used a 13-2 run to pull within one, 70-69, with just over a minute to go following a pair of Wiseman free throws. The Penmen were 4-5 from the floor during the run and all four of its free throw attempts. After three empty trips by both clubs, SNHU called a timeout with the ball with 39 seconds remaining.
Hayes came up with a steal with 18 seconds to go and the Penmen were forced to foul Bradford, who made her first free throw but missed the second, with Wiseman corralling the rebound. Following a timeout, SNHU would go inside to Sorrell, who converted a layup with three seconds remaining to tie the game 71-71.
New Haven called timeout to set up a final play, but the inbounds pass was stolen by Sorrell and she was fouled. Sorrell missed the first free throw, but made the second to give the Penmen their first lead of the second half. The Chargers called another timeout but were unable to get a final look.
The Chargers held a 35-34 halftime lead and outscored the Penmen 12-2 over the first four minutes of the second half to open up a 47-36 advantage. New Haven took its largest lead, 58-43, with 10:25 remaining on a three by Lauren Hebert and maintained a double-digit lead until SNHU's final flurry.
Southern New Hampshire led much of the first half and held a 32-25 lead with just over six minutes remaining following a basket by Sorrell. The Chargers held the Penmen scoreless for the next five minutes and a 10-0 New Haven run capped by a Tran basket with 1:09 remaining gave the hosts a 35-32 lead. Chelsea Dunham (Johnson, Vt.) converted a layup with four seconds remaining to make it 35-34 at intermission.
The Penmen shot 53.8% in the second half and 45.9% for the game while holding New Haven to 39.1% shooting for the contest. Southern New Hampshire was 6-14 behind the arc while New Haven was 9-21, and the guests were able to overcome a 10-21 effort at the free throw line while the Chargers made 12-14 at the charity stripe. SNHU outrebounded New Haven 45-35 on the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Pace University for a 5:30 game. The next Penmen home game is Saturday, January 26 when SNHU hosts Adelphi University in a 1:30 contest.
