Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) registered a career-high 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Southern New Hampshire University topped Southern Connecticut State University 67-53 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who have won four of five, improve to 10-8 and 7-7 in the NE-10, while the Owls are now 5-12 and 2-12 in the league.
The win was career win No. 100 for eighth-year Southern New Hampshire head coach Karen Pinkos.
Wiseman was 6-8 from the floor and 9-11 at the free throw line while also recording four assists as she led four players in double figures in the scoring column. Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) recorded 13 points, while Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) notched all 11 of her points in the second half. She also finished with eight rebounds, while Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) scored nine of her 11 points in the first half, going 5-7 from the floor.
Mariah Hankton led the Owls with 14 points, while Camille Fantini drained three three-pointers and notched 11 points. Jackie Beathea narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Leading 31-25 at halftime, Southern New Hampshire opened the second half with a 17-2 blitz to build a 21-point cushion, 48-27, on a Sorrell layup with 15:27 to play. Southern Connecticut scored nine of the next 10 points and a Fantini three with 12:05 left pulled the Owls within 13, 49-36. The Penmen countered with a 10-4 spurt and Wiseman's basket with 8:24 left made it a 59-40 contest. Southern Connecticut pulled within 12 twice in the final 1:56, but could get no closer.
Southern New Hampshire never trailed and opened a 14-8 lead seven minutes into the game following a layup by Rocha. The Owls cut the lead to one twice, the last time on a Beathea basket with 7:50 to go before halftime that made it 16-15, but the Penmen took a 31-25 lead into the locker room on a DeRoma three 20 seconds before intermission.
The Penmen shot 46.2% for the game, including a 4-10 effort behind the arc, and also took eight more trips to the free throw line, going 15-20 while Southern Connecticut was just 4-12. The Owls shot 41.1% for the game, with Southern New Hampshire holding a 37-33 rebounding advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it travels to American International College for a 1:30 contest. The next Penmen home game is Wednesday, February 6, when SNHU hosts crosstown rival Saint Anselm College in a 5:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
