MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire University baseball program hosted its annual Major League Baseball Scout Day Thursday afternoon, as 23 MLB scouts visited campus to observe individual skill workouts by Penmen players. Position players participated in infield and outfield drills and batting practice, while the Penmen pitchers threw off the mound for scouts.
The Penmen have had eight players join the professional baseball ranks in the past three seasons, including a program-record three players drafted in the 2013 MLB Draft. Pitchers Junior Mendez and Jon Massad were drafted by the Oakland Athletics, while reliever Alex Powers was selected by the Chicago White Sox. A fourth pitcher, Tyler Gauthier, inked a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays over the summer.
The SNHU baseball program posted a 35-19 record in 2013 and hosted the NCAA East Regional for the second straight season.
