Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire softball team won one and lost one in a non-conference doubleheader game against LIU Post Saturday afternoon. The Penmen are now 7-5 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 14-5.
In the first game of the day, Southern New Hampshire would fall to the Pioneers by a score of 4-0.
LIU Post was able to capitalize on two Penmen errors in order to earn the win.
Southern New Hampshire would have its best opportunity to score in the fourth inning when Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) led off with a single, followed by a Kate Stanley (Kinston, Mass.) single to put the two Penmen on base. However, the Pioneers would retire the next three batters in order to keep SNHU from scoring.
LIU Post scored its first run in the third inning when a pair of hits and two errors would score Catherine Havens. The Pioneers would score three more runs in the seventh inning once again on an error and a pair of hits.
Maloof would get the loss in the circle for the Penmen striking out five, while Liz Weber would register the win for LIU Post with nine strikeouts and giving up five hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader, SNHU would bounce back to defeat the Pioneers by a score of 5-2.
LIU Post would score the first runs of the game in the third inning when Weber hit a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead on the Penmen. However, SNHU would answer in the fourth inning by scoring three runs to take the lead.
A Maloof single and a stolen base would put her in scoring position, and back-to-back singles would score the sophomore for the first Penmen run of the game. Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.), Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.), and Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.) would all contribute to the three run, four hit inning to take the lead heading into the fifth.
Two more Penmen runs in the bottom of the fifth inning would build on the lead and secure the win. A Stanley double would score Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, N.H.) who was hit by a pitch, and Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.), who led off with a single.
Rebecca Sherwood (Braintree, Mass.) would be credited with the win in the circle for the Penmen, while Quincy Lewis would get the loss for the Pioneers.
The Penmen return to action on Tuesday, April 2 when they travel to Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 Conference game at 3:00 p.m.
