Box Score 2 WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Southern New Hampshire University softball team was defeated 4-1, and 11-3 by No. 8 Rollins College in a doubleheader Monday evening. The Penmen are now 2-2 on the season, while the Tars improve to 23-2 overall.
In the first game, the Penmen would hold a 1-1 lead through three innings, but could not stop the Tars as they scored three unanswered runs in the fourth inning.
A lead-off walk in the bottom of the first inning followed by a Southern New Hampshire error would put two Tars on base and one in scoring position. A fielder's choice from Kristie Hoeffer would send in the first run and the Tars would take a 1-0 lead into the second inning.
The Penmen answered in the top of the third, when Kate Stanley (Kingston, N.H.) reached first on a walk. Stanley would advance to third on a Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) single, and Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) would single up the middle to score Stanley and earn the lone RBI of the game for the Penmen. SNHU would put away the Tars' side to end the third and head into the fourth inning tied up at 1-1.
However, Southern New Hampshire could not keep the tie for long as Rollins' first three batters would get on base, and a Jessica Gipson double would score two runs. Another Tars' hit would bring Gipson around the bases and give them a 4-1 run advantage over SNHU.
Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) would get the loss in the circle for the Penmen. She pitched six innings while giving up four hits, and striking out three batters. Niki Fogle continued her perfect record for the Tars while giving up five hits, one run, and striking out 10 batters.
In the nightcap, the Penmen jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Stanley notched a two-run homer to right center. The senior's homerun marks her 24th career blast, and breaks her previous program-best 23 career homerun record which she shared with 2010 graduate Andrea Clausi.
SNHU held its lead for the first inning, but the Tars were too much for the Penmen in the second inning as they scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead.
The Penmen would score once again in the third inning to cut the deficit to two runs when Stanley recorded her second homerun of the game with a solo shot to left center.
However, Rollins scored two more runs in the fourth inning, and four more in the fifth to end the game.
Freshman Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) would make her collegiate debut while taking the loss in the circle for SNHU. Sullivan notched the win for the Tars on three runs, five hits, and four strikeouts.
The Penmen return to action Wednesday, March 6 when they return to the National Training Center to take on Post at 1:00 p.m., followed by Wilmington (Del.) at 5:00 p.m.
