Penmen Pick Up Two More Wins Behind Maloof, Stanley

CLERMONT, Fla.Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) carried a perfect game until the seventh inning for the SNHU softball team while leading the Penmen to a 2-1 win over Post University Wednesday afternoon. The Penmen improve to 4-2 overall while Post is now 4-4.

Maloof, who pitched a complete game while giving up just one hit, one run, and striking out nine, would also record a hit and a run for the Penmen.

Southern New Hampshire would take an early 1-0 lead over the Eagles in the first inning when Maloof would make it around the bases on a Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) RBI, after reaching on a walk.

SNHU would strike again in the second inning after retiring the Eagles' side in the bottom of the first. Led-off by a Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) single, the freshman would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt, and continue to score on a sacrifice fly from Morgan Farmer (Kingston, N.H.).

The Penmen and Maloof would carry the 2-0 lead all the way until the seventh inning before Lianna May would break up the perfect game for the sophomore with a homerun to put the Eagles on the board. Maloof would retire the next two batters to earn the win for the Penmen.

Ashley Cummings would get the loss in the circle for Post as she gave up four hits, two runs, and struck out three in seven innings.

In the second game of the day, the Southern New Hampshire softball team defeated an 8-6 Wilmington (Del.) by a score of 11-10.

Nine SNHU players would record a hit in the win, while three players notched a homerun.

A three-run homer in the first inning from Jillian Stafford would give the Wildcats an early 3-0 lead over SNHU. However, Maloof would match Stafford when she hit a solo homer to cut the deficit to two runs heading into the second inning.

The Wildcats would score again in the second to push the lead back to three, but the Penmen would take the lead in the bottom of the second powered by a Daly two run homerun.

Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) would lead-off the inning with a double, and Daly would follow with a blast to left center.  Three more Penmen hits, including a double from Natalie Metta (Norwood, Mass.), and a single through the right side from Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) would score three more runs and give the Penmen the lead for the first time in the game.

Stanley would notch her third, fourth, and fifth RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning when she hit a three run homer to left field, and one more Penmen run would give SNHU a 10-4 lead to end the inning.

Wilmington would answer Southern New Hampshire's three run inning after knocking in six runs in the fifth and tying the game at 10 runs apiece.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Penmen would score once more to regain the lead and secure the win. A Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, N.H.) double to left center, and a stolen base would set Maloof up for her second RBI of the game as she grounded out to second base, and Jenkins was able to score from third base for the game-winning run.

Rebecca Sherwood (Braintree, Mass.) earned the win in the circle for the Penmen while pitching 2.2 innings and giving up just one hit and no runs with four strikeouts. Stafford would suffer her first loss of the season with five innings pitched and giving up 11 hits, eight runs, and striking out three.

The Penmen return to action tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. when they close out play at the National Training Center with games against Hillsdale and Cedarville.
