Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Southern New Hampshire softball team would close out its six-game stretch in Florida on Thursday at the National Training Center with two wins to finish the tournament 6-0 on Thursday afternoon. Ten first inning runs would facilitate a 17-1 victory over Hillsdale College in the first game, while SNHU would defeat Cedarville in a 7-3 decision in the later game. The Penmen return home with a 6-2 overall record.
In the first game, the Penmen would score 10 runs on 10 hits in the first inning. They would lead off with five consecutive hits, including four singles and a double to score four early runs. The scoring would not end there however, as three more runs would score on errors, and Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) would knock in her fourth homerun of the season to score three more runs.
Hillsdale would answer in the bottom of the second when Jessica Day scored on a Kate Hoop RBI. Day, who led-off the inning with a single to the shortstop, would advance to second on a Miriam McKay single, and make it around the bases when Hoop singled through the left side to put the Chargers on the board.
However, SNHU would strike again in the top of the third and score five more runs. Four hits, including two doubles and a pair of singles would bring around five more Penmen and push the lead to 15-1 heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Penmen would hold Hillsdale scoreless in the third, and would score twice more in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 10 runs. Natalie Metta (Norwood, Mass.) would score the first run after leading off with a triple down the right field line and scoring on a Chargers throwing error. Christiana Galella (Eastchester, N.Y.) and Stanley would follow with back-to-back doubles, and a sacrifice flyout would score Galella from third to end the inning.
Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) would get the start in the circle, and earn the win for the Penmen while pitching five innings, striking out three, and giving up just one run on seven hits. Brittany Hulett, who gave up 13 hits and seven runs would get the loss in the circle for Hillsdale.
In the second game of the day, Cedarville would jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, when Kelsey Wilson notched a two-run homer. However, Southern New Hampshire would answer in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) to score Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, N.H.), who led-off with a walk. Lindsay Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) would bat in the second run of the inning on a single to score Maloof.
The Penmen would score two more runs in the bottom of the second and the third to take the first lead of the game. Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) would hit a two-run single to score Maloof and Jenkins, and to take a 4-2 lead in the second, while Nicole Newell (Abington, Mass.) hit an RBI double, and continued around the bases on a Jenkins single for the second run of the third.
After retiring the Yellow Jackets' side in the fourth inning, Southern New Hampshire would score once more on a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-2 heading into the fifth. However, Cedarville would answer in the fifth off a Rachel Bull RBI double to cut the run deficit to four.
Maloof would improve her record to 3-1 in the circle for the Penmen while pitching a complete game with 10 strikeouts. She would let up just three runs and six hits, while Jennifer Spann would get the loss for the Yellow Jackets giving up seven runs on 12 hits.
The Penmen return to action on Saturday, March 16 when they travel to Southern Connecticut for a doubleheader game at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
