Box Score 2 RINDGE, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire softball team swept Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. With the win the Penmen improve to 20-9 while the Ravens fall to 6-20.
Two late runs were the difference in game one as the Penmen defeated the Ravens by a score of 2-0.
Scoreless through the fourth inning, the Penmen scored their first and only runs of the game in the top of the fifth when Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, N.H.) doubled to left field for two RBIs. Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) led off the inning with a single up the middle, followed by a Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) single to advance Stanley to second. Cara Daly's (Plainville, Mass.) sacrifice bunt put the two in scoring position, and Jenkins followed with a blast to score the two runs.
Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) earned the win in the circle for the Penmen with 11 strikeouts, and allowing just two hits and no runs. Rachel Allen got the loss for Franklin Pierce in the circle after giving up nine hits and two runs.
In game two of the day, the Penmen did not score until the fifth inning once again, and a big seventh inning pushed SNHU past the Ravens by a score of 5-0.
As neither team scored through four innings of play, the Penmen finally put a run on the board in the fifth.
With two outs in the top of the inning, Christiana Galella (Eastchester, N.Y.) got on base after walking, and continued to score on a Daly double to left center to take a 1-0 lead.
The Penmen struck again in the final inning as Daly led off with a single, and Jenkins reached on a Franklin Pierce throwing error. A Ravens' passed ball scored Daly, and Jenkins advanced to third. Jenkins continued to score when Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.) grounded out to the shortstop, and a Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) homerun scored two more to bring the run total to five.
Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) was credited with the win in the circle for the Penmen, while Tricia Hansen got the loss for Franklin Pierce. Mattice pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, no runs, and allowed just three hits.
The Penmen return to action Friday, April 19 when they travel to Merrimack College for a league doubleheader at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
