WOBURN, Mass. – The No. 3 Southern New Hampshire men's tennis team defeated No. 2 Bentley University by a score of 5-3 in a Northeast-10 Championship semi-final match Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Penmen advance the the conference championship against Merrimack College Sunday. Southern New Hampshire is now 13-7 on the season, while Bentley sees its season come to a close at 7-10.
The Penmen return to the championship match for the second time in three years. Southern New Hampshire has never won an NE-10 title, and fell to Bentley University in the 2010-11 season by a score of 5-4.
Bentley took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but Southern New Hampshire bounced back in singles play while claiming four out of five completed matches to earn its spot in the championship match.
Juan Arango-Campo (Armenia Quindio, Colombia) and Evan Eaton (Winchester, Mass.) were victorious in doubles play for the lone Penmen point. The No. 2 duo defeated Alex DeMuth and Andrew Waddington by a score of 8-2.
Trailing 2-1 entering singles competition, Mitch Dobek (Westfield, Mass.) claimed the win at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Rodrigo Ribeiro, while Arango-Campo earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jimmy Rindo at No. 2. Mike Wallace (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Alex Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) each contributed to the win with a point in singles play as well. Wallace pulled away from Kamil Pilch in third singles by a score of 6-4, 6-2, and Mukdaprakorn added a point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4.
The Penmen return to action tomorrow, April 21, when they travel to top-seeded Merrimack College for a chance for their first NE-10 title with the match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
