Box Score 2 MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire softball team swept Pace University Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action. With the win, the Penmen improve to 10-8 while the Setters are now 10-11.
Back-to-back multiple run innings aided the Penmen to a 6-2 win over Pace in the first game.
The Setters took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Natalie Gellos homered to left center, but they remained scoreless through the remainder of the game.
Southern New Hampshire answered in the bottom of the inning when Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) reached on an error, and a Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) single scored the freshman to cut the deficit to one run heading into the second inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the Penmen scored two more runs on two hits in the third to take the lead. Bolduc reached first after being hit by a pitch, and Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) followed with a double to advance Bolduc to third. Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) hit an RBI single with two outs to score Maloof and Bolduc and to take a 3-2 lead.
The fourth inning brought more runs to SNHU when Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.) and Morgan Farmer (Kingston, N.H.) led off with back-to-back singles, and a Christiana Galella (Eastchester, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt advanced the runners. Daly continued to score on a wild pitch, and a Maloof single scored Farmer. Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) then grounded out to second base, but earned an RBI when Bolduc scored for the third run of the inning.
Maloof was credited with the win in the circle while pitching 6.2 innings and giving up just three hits and striking out three. Chelsea Shea pitched a complete game while letting up eight hits and six runs.
In the second game, the Penmen defeated the Setters by a score of 12-4 in five innings by the eight-run rule.
Despite an early first inning lead by Pace, SNHU answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Maloof reached after being hit by a pitch, and Cheney singled up the middle to advance Maloof to third. Cheney continued to steal second base, while Maloof stole home to put the Penmen on the board. Stanasek followed with a single to put Cheney in scoring position, and a Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, N.H.) double scored two more.
Pace regained the lead in the third inning when they scored three more runs. A Katie Lange homerun to left field scored Wright and McMahon who both reached on singles.
However, Southern New Hampshire took the lead once again in the bottom of the third, and held Pace scoreless for the remainder of the game. Five third inning runs pushed the Penmen lead to 8-4 heading into the fourth.
Three more runs in the fourth inning boosted the run total to 11 for SNHU. After Daly reached on a Pace error, and Farmer walked, Douillette singled to score Metta, who pinch ran for Daly, and a Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) double scored two more runs in the inning.
After retiring the side in the top of the fifth, the Penmen scored one more run to secure the win with the eight-run rule.
Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) earned the win in the circle for SNHU while pitching four innings and striking out three. Kelly Fisher got the loss for Pace while giving up 11 runs and eight hits.
The Penmen return to action Tuesday, April 9 when they host Franklin Pierce for a league doubleheader at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
