MANCHESTER, N.H. – Two members of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team, Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) and Derrick Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.), were named to the Capital One Academic All-District baseball team on Thursday afternoon. The pair are now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America honors.
Powers, a junior relief pitcher who is a Business Administration major, has served as SNHU's closer for much of the past two seasons. In 16 appearances this season he is 3-0 with seven saves, compiling a 2.52 earned run average and striking out 43 batters in 35.2 innings of work, while in his 14 relief appearances Powers has posted a 1.48 ERA. In 2012 Powers was a Daktronics Honorable Mention All-America selection while he was a Daktronics and NCBWA All-Region selection.
Sylvester, a junior starting pitcher majoring in Psychology, has bounced back nicely after missing the entire 2012 season. In nine starts this season Sylvester is 5-2 with a 1.56 earned run average, fanning 56 batters in 57.2 innings of work while walking just 15. Opposing batters have batted just .248 against Sylvester this season.
Southern New Hampshire, 32-14 overall, returns to action Saturday night when it hosts Franklin Pierce University in a key 7:00 contest at Penmen Field.
