Chestnut Hill Works Overtime to Down Women's Basketball 79-72

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Chestnut Hill College outscored Southern New Hampshire University 17-10 in overtime to post a 79-72 non-conference women's basketball victory at Sorgenti Arena Sunday afternoon.  The Griffins upped their record to 2-11, while the Penmen now stand at 5-7 on the season.

Olivia Gorczynski and Annie Farrow paced Chestnut Hill with 18 points apiece, with Gorczynski knocking down four three-pointers.  Tenisha Townsend-Mobley added 14 points and seven rebounds, going 8-11 at the free throw line for the game.

Junior Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) led Southern New Hampshire with 17 points, one shy of her career high, while also handing out six assists.  Sophomore Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) posted her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) knocked down three three-pointers and totaled 13 points.

After trailing by four early in the extra session, Southern New Hampshire took a 68-67 lead on a Springfield three with 2:06 remaining.  The lead was short-lived, as Gorczynski knocked down a three at the other end to put Chestnut Hill up a pair with 1:35 to go.  After another three-point attempt by Springfield was off the mark, the Griffins controlled the rebound and went 9-12 at the free throw line over the final 1:02 to seal the win.

Southern New Hampshire trailed 54-50 just past the midway mark of the second half, but scored six straight points capped by a Bianca Langford (Worcester, Mass.) layup to take a 56-54 lead with 6:39 left.  Another layup by Langford with 3:35 left gave the guests a 60-56 lead, but Chestnut Hill scored the next four points to tie the game with just under two minutes to go.

Springfield converted a layup with 1:45 left to give SNHU a 62-60 lead, but on the other end, Townsend-Mobley scored to tie the game with 1:25 left.  After the two teams traded empty trips, the Penmen had the ball with 20 seconds left and a chance to win, but were unable to convert to send the game to overtime.

The first half saw six ties and 11 lead changes and neither side leading by more than four points as Chestnut Hill took a 35-33 lead into the locker room.

Chestnut Hill shot 40% for the contest while limiting the Penmen to 32.9% shooting for the contest, and the hosts knocked down six of their 17 three-point attempts while SNHU was 5-21 behind the arc.  The Griffins were 17-21 at the free throw line while Southern New Hampshire converted 15 of its 17 free throw attempts.  SNHU held a 55-41 rebounding advantage, including 21-10 on the offensive glass, that led to a 18-10 advantage in second chance points.

SNHU returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Southern Connecticut State University for a 5:30 Northeast-10 contest.  The next Penmen home game is set for Saturday, January 11 when SNHU hosts American International College in a 1:30 NE-10 tilt.
