Northeast-10 women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at the Ross Sports Center. SMC improves to 3-1 and 1-1 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 2-2 and 0-2 in the league.
Sabine was 7-13 from the floor and also grabbed six rebounds. Makenzie Burud finished with a double-double, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Indira Evora added 12 points and seven boards. Kelly Frappier contributed 11 points.
Southern New Hampshire was led by senior
Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) and junior
Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.), who each finished with 12 points, with Griffin grabbing seven rebounds.
Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) added 10 points off the bench, while
Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) tallied nine points.
SNHU trailed 17-10 eight minutes into the game when a 10-3 run capped by a Doherty layup with 8:19 left before intermission tied the game 20-20. The Penmen took a 27-25 lead on a Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) three at the 4:05 mark, but six straight points gave the hosts a 31-27 lead. Springfield was fouled as time expired and sank two free throws to make it 31-29 at the break.
The Penmen tied the game on their first possession of the second half, but Saint Michael's outscored the guests 14-4 over the first six minutes of the second half to build a 45-33 lead. SNHU trailed 61-51 with just over eight minutes left when it reeled off seven straight points capped by a Wiseman layup at the 2:08 mark to pull within three, 61-58.
After the teams traded empty possessions, a layup attempt by Wiseman with 49 seconds left was off the mark. The Penmen fouled SMC on their next trip, with Evora missing the front end of the one-and-one. After another empty Penmen trip, and another missed Purple Knight free throw, SNHU turned it over with seven seconds left. Sabine sank a pair at the line with six seconds left to account for the final.
Saint Michael's shot 49% from the floor for the game and made 11 of their 14 free throw attempts, while the guests shot 37.5% overall and went 6-9 at the stripe, while knocking down 4-8 from downtown. The Purple Knights held a 37-31 rebounding advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts defending national champion Bentley University in a 5:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
