Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. - Graduate student Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) totaled a career-best 23 points as Southern New Hampshire University downed Caldwell University 73-69 in women's basketball Sunday afternoon. The Penmen won their third straight to improve to 6-6, while the Cougars fall to 7-7 with the loss.
Wiseman, who established her career high in just 15 minutes of action, finished 7-12 from the floor, including 2-4 behind the arc, and knocked down seven of her eight free throw attempts. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) was 6-10 from the floor and tallied 12 points. Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) added 10 points and five assists.
Caldwell was led by Emily Caswell who notched 19 points and 18 rebounds, while Nicole Angelo and Kristen Drogsler added 11 points apiece.
Southern New Hampshire led 34-32 at halftime, but Caldwell outscored the Penmen 15-8 over the first nine minutes of the second half to build a 47-42 lead. The guests countered with a 15-8 run of their own, and a pair of Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) free throws at the 6:32 mark put SNHU back on top 57-55.
The lead changed hands twice before a Doherty basket with just over four minutes remaining gave Southern New Hampshire the lead for good, 60-59. SNHU increased its lead to five, 66-61, on a Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) three with 1:41 left. Caldwell cut it to a one possession game twice, the last time an Angelo three with 38 seconds to go making it 68-66, but Wiseman went 5-6 at the free throw line the rest of the way to seal the victory.
SNHU opened up a 19-11 lead eight minutes into the game on a Griffin layup, but in a first frame that saw five lead changes, Caldwell stormed back to take a 24-21 lead on an Angelo three at the 7:46 mark, capping a 13-2 run. The lead changed hands three more times before Southern New Hampshire carved out a 34-32 halftime advantage.
The Penmen shot 45.2% for the contest and were 5-13 behind the three-point arc while limiting Caldwell to 38.2% from the floor, including a 4-19 effort from three-point land. Southern New Hampshire took eight more free throws, going 12-19 while the Cougars went 7-11, and the guests held a 47-41 rebounding advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday, January 3 when it travels to Merrimack College for a 1:00 Northeast-10 contest.
