MANCHESTER, N.H. – Tori Faieta totaled 11 points and 17 rebounds as No. 4/10 Stonehill College turned back an upset bid by Southern New Hampshire University for a 51-49 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Skyhawks upped their record to 6-1 and 4-1 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 3-6 and 0-5 in the league.
Faieta also finished with four assists and a pair of blocked shots as she finished 5-11 from the floor. Amy Pelletier was the other Skyhawk in double figures, as she scored all 11 of her points in the second half, finishing two shy of the 1,000-point mark for her career. Kelly Martin added seven points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) led Southern New Hampshire with her first double-double of the season, recording 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) had all of her career-high 12 points in the first half, while Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) added nine points.
Southern New Hampshire led most of the way and held a 37-25 lead with 13:31 to play following a Ryan basket. Stonehill used a 14-3 run capped by a Pelletier three to pull within one, 40-39, with 10:52 left. The Skyhawks took their first lead, 48-47, with 5:45 left on a Samantha Hyslip basket.
The Penmen reclaimed the lead at the 3:29 mark on a Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) basket, and it remained a 49-48 game until the 1:17 mark when Martin's jumper put the guests back on top, 50-49. SNHU turned it over on its next possession with 53 seconds left, and following two fouls, sent Faieta to the line. Faieta made the first, but missed the second, with Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) grabbing the rebound.
Wiseman would be fouled going to the basket by Faieta with 0.6 seconds left. After missing the first free throw, she intentionally missed the second. Ryan came up with the rebound but time expired before she could get a shot away.
SNHU held Stonehill without a field goal for a nearly 10-minute stretch in the first half to open up an 11-3 lead at the 8:44 mark. The Penmen took their largest lead, 27-13, with 52 seconds left on a Doherty free throw, and held a 27-15 lead at halftime.
Stonehill shot 60% (15-25) in the second half and 43.1% for the game while limiting the hosts to 30.3% shooting for the contest. The Penmen held a 41-38 rebound advantage and forced 21 Skyhawk turnovers that turned into 18 points, but SNHU was just 4-10 at the free throw line, while the guests made two of their four attempts. Stonehill went 5-12 behind the arc, making all five over the final 20 minutes, while SNHU was 5-19 from downtown.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts No. 16 Assumption in a 5:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse. That game can be heard live in the Manchester area on WGIR 610 AM.
