Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael's College recorded a 64-63 overtime victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Ross Sports Center. The Purple Knights upped their record to 4-20 and 3-17 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 7-18 and 5-15 in the league.
Saint Michael's was led by Alexa Long and Kelly Frappier, who finished with 12 points apiece, with Long grabbing six rebounds. Makenzie Burud recorded a double-double off the bench, notching 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Southern New Hampshire's Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) led all scorers with 17 points, going 3-4 from three-point land and also grabbing six rebounds. Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) and Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) each finished with 12 points.
In overtime, a Ryan three gave the Penmen an initial 59-56 lead before five lead changes gave the Purple Knights a 64-63 lead with 29 ticks left on a Burud basket. Following a timeout, SNHU got a contested look at the game-winner by Emily O'Callaghan (Cork, Ireland), but her attempt was off the mark as the Purple Knights held on for the victory.
Saint Michael's led 46-32 with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation before nine straight Penmen points capped by an O'Callaghan basket made it 46-41 with just over 10 minutes left. Southern New Hampshire tied the game 48-48 with 5:34 left on a conventional three-point play by Ryan, and took a 52-50 lead with 3:52 left on a Springfield basket.
SNHU led 56-52 following a Ryan basket at the 2:15 mark, but SMC scored the next four points and a pair of Burud free throws with 47 seconds left tied the game 56-56. On the next Penmen possession Springfield's shot was off the mark. On the final possession by the hosts, Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) came up big defensively, first blocking an attempt at a game-winner by Burud, then coming up with a steal after Frappier came up with an offensive rebound.
Saint Michael's led by 10 twice in the opening 20 minutes, the last time on a Frappier free throw with 4:46 left that made it 26-16 in favor of the Purple Knights. SMC held a 30-24 lead going into the locker room after a Ryan basket with 36 seconds remaining.
The hosts, who held a 46-30 rebounding advantage, shot just 35.3% from the floor, but went 13-17 at the free throw line while SNHU was 9-13. Southern New Hampshire shot 44.6% from the field and knocked down four of its 10 three-point attempts, while Saint Michael's went 3-13 from long range.
Southern New Hampshire closes out the season Tuesday night when it hosts Assumption College for Senior Night in a contest slated for a 5:30 tip.
