Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Tori Lehr finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds as Saint Anselm College downed Southern New Hampshire University 77-60 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Wednesday night at Saint Anselm's Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The Hawks now stand 11-10 and 7-9 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are 7-13 and 5-10 in the league.
Lehr finished 9-13 from the floor and was one of three Hawks in double figures. Candace Andrews totaled 18 points and six assists, while Briana Jones added 14 points on 6-10 shooting.
Southern New Hampshire was led by sophomore Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) who tallied a career-high 22 points on 7-9 shooting both from the floor and at the free throw line. Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) totaled 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and added 13 points.
The Penmen trailed 31-29 at halftime, but outscored the Hawks 15-10 over the first five minutes of the second half to take a 44-41 lead on a layup by Bianca Langford (Worcester, Mass.). Saint Anselm would counter with nine straight points to open a 50-44 lead with 13:45 on a Meg Morrissey layup, and from there the hosts gradually pulled away, leading by as many as 23 points the rest of the way.
SNHU led much of the first half and held a 14-8 lead eight minutes into the game following a basket by Rocha. Saint Anselm took a 25-24 lead with 3:35 left on a pair of Jones free throws. From there, the lead changed hands four times before an Ashley Viselli layup 1:19 before intermission gave the Hawks a 31-29 halftime lead.
Saint Anselm, which outrebounded SNHU 41-28, shot 50.8% for the game and held the Penmen to 44% shooting. Southern New Hampshire took eight more trips to the free throw line, going 13-21 while the Hawks were 9-13 at the stripe, and the guests were 3-10 behind the arc while Saint Anselm was 2-10 from long range.
Southern New Hampshire travels to Merrimack College Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 Northeast-10 contest. The next Penmen home game is set for Saturday, February 15 when SNHU hosts Stonehill College in a 1:30 tilt. That game is the annual Penmen Pink Day for breast cancer awareness.
