Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team was defeated by a score of 10-9 to Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference play Saturday afternoon. The Penmen are now 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the league, while the Greyhounds improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Assumption outscored the Penmen in the first period, which proved to be the difference, as the team's traded an equal amount of goals each in the next three quarters
Connor Munisteri got the scoring going in the first when he notched a goal at the 13:54 mark to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead. The lead did not stay long, as Jeremy Buckley (Norwell, Mass.) scored two minutes later from Phil LaTorre (Londonderry, N.H.) to tie the game. Assumption answered with two scores, and took a two-goal lead with 9:08 remaining. Four minutes later, LaTorre notched his first tally of the season on a man-up opportunity to cut the deficit to one goal heading into the second quarter.
Buckley continued the scoring for the Penmen in the second when he scored his sixth goal of the season, and second of the game to tie the game at 3-3. The teams traded the next goals, as Ty Martina took back the lead with his score for Assumption, and then Corey Allen (Suffield, Conn.) tied it up again at four. The Greyhounds were able to score one more when they converted on a man-up opportunity to regain the one goal lead going into halftime.
Assumption started the second half scoring back-to-back goals, and taking a 7-4 lead, their largest of the game with 10:43 left. But, SNHU answered quickly scoring three straight, including one just 22 seconds later, and then another at the 8:28 mark from Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.). Joyce then notched another, his third of the season, to tie the game at 7-7, but the Greyhounds snuck in one more goal before the end of the quarter to take an 8-7 lead.
The teams traded goals once again early in the final quarter as Rob Murray (Marblehead, Mass.) followed a Martina goal at the 9:55 mark. Assumption scored again with under five to play in the quarter to take a 10-8 lead. Joyce was able to score with 1:00 remaining from Murray, but the Penmen ran out of time before they could tie the game.
Morgan Weireter (Oak Park, Calif.) made 14 saves in net for SNHU, while Matt Comerford had 16 for Assumption.
The Penmen return to action next Saturday when they travel to Pace University for a league game at 12:00 p.m.
