CLERMONT, Fla. – In its second day of play at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida, the Southern New Hampshire University softball team swept in order to up its record to 3-1 overall.

The Penmen defeated Lake Erie by a score of 17-1 in the first game and turned around to beat No. 18 Florida Tech by a score of 1-0 in the second game.

In the first game of the day, 12 different players crossed the plate to score. SNHU scored eight first-inning runs, six-second inning runs, and three fourth-inning runs en route to the win.

Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) led the Penmen and went 3-3 at the plate with two doubles, five RBIs, and a home run. Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.) was 2-2 for the game with a single, and a two-RBI double. Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) chipped in, bringing home two runs with a double in the first inning, and Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) added a double and a single as well.

Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) struck out nine batters while giving up only three runs and five hits for the Penmen.

In the second game of the day, the Penmen scored one run in the second inning, while holding off Florida Tech for the rest of the game to earn its second win of the day, and third overall.

After a quick first inning for both teams, the Panthers were able to get on base with a lead-off single, and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt, but left the runner on base after Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) struck out the next two batters.

In the bottom of the second, Bolduc led-off for SNHU with a walk to get on first, and advanced to second on a Morgan Farmer (Kingston, N.H.) single up the middle. Both batters advanced again when Caruso grounded out to the first baseman on a sacrifice bunt, and an error put both in scoring position, with Bolduc at third, and Farmer on second. Senior Christiana Galella (Eastchester, N.Y.) followed with a single to left field, scoring Bolduc to give the Penmen a 1-0 advantage. SNHU tried to build on the lead sending Farmer home on a Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) fielder's choice, but she was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Florida Tech retired the next batter, and SNHU took the 1-0 lead into the third inning.

Maloof and the defense quickly retired the side in the next two innings, holding onto its lead.

The Panthers had their best opportunity to tie the game up in the top of the sixth when Godfrey led-off with a single to get on base. She then stole second to put herself in scoring position and advanced once again to third on a ground-out. With two outs and the tying run on base, Callahan fouled out to the catcher to end the inning and leave Godfrey at third. The Penmen ended the sixth quickly, with three outs, and took a 1-0 advantage into the top of the seventh.

Maloof struck out the first batter of the inning but then gave up a single down the left field line. With a runner on base and one out, the Panthers lined into a double play to end the game.

Maloof totaled nine strikeouts in the circle, giving up five hits and no-runs for her first shutout of the season.

The Penmen return to action tomorrow, as they continue play in Florida at Hancock Park, and face Georgian Court at 9:00 a.m., followed by Holy Family at 11:00 a.m.
