Box Score 2 EASTON, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire softball team split in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Stonehill Saturday afternoon at Gartland Field. The Penmen are now 19-8 overall, while the Skyhawks improve to 14-14.
In the first game of the day, the Penmen defeated the Skyhawks by a score of 6-0.
The Penmen put up three runs in the top of the third to take an early lead. After Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) led-off with a walk, Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) singled to right center, and advanced to second, while Maloof moved to third. Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.) followed with a double for two RBIs, and Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) singled up the middle to score Eicher, and to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) built on the lead again in the top of the fourth with a lead-off solo homerun to left center to go up 4-0, and a pair of runs in the fifth innings upped the run total to six.
Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) got on base in the fifth with a single to the shortstop, and Maloof sent her home with her third homerun of the season to right center to score two more runs.
Maloof got the win in the circle going a full seven innings, and totaling eight strikeouts. She allowed just three hits and zero runs. Megan Ruonavaara got the loss in the circle for Stonehill going 4.1 innings with one strikeout and allowing six hits and six runs.
In the second game of the day, the Penmen fell by a score of 3-1 to the Skyhawks.
Stonehill took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when McKillip homered to left field to score Sumski, who reached on a single.
The Penmen had their best opportunity to score in the top of the third with the bases loaded and just one out. However, the Skyhawks were able to get the next two outs and SNHU left three on base.
In the bottom of the innings, Stonehill built on its lead scoring another run on a Sumski lead-off homer to left center to take a 3-0 lead.
Southern New Hampshire tried for a comeback in the top of the seventh when Bolduc led-off with a single through the left side to get on base. Skyler Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.) pinch ran for Bolduc, and made it to third on a wild pitch. A Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.) sacrifice fly scored the freshman to cut the deficit to two-runs, but with two outs, a groundout ended the inning and the game.
Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) pitched six innings for the Penmen totaling two strikeouts and giving up seven hits and three runs, while Michelle Carbone got the win in the circle for Stonehill allowing three hits, one run, and recording four strikeouts.
The Penmen return to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 13 at Stonehill to finish out the three-game series with a single game starting at 12:30 p.m.
