Men's Lacrosse Takes 12-11 Victory over Mercy

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team defeated Mercy College 12-11 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening. The Penmen improve to 6-7 overall and the Mavericks fall to 9-6 overall.

Jeremy Buckley (Norwell, Mass.) led the Penmen attack with four goals while Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) scored three goals and Phil LaTorre (Londonderry, N.H.) notched two. Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) also scored one goal while Crosby Nicholson (Andover, Mass.) and Cory Allen (Suffield, Conn.) each had a tally and an assist.

Mercy got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter before Buckley notched his first goal of the game with 4:51 remaining. The Mavericks put one more on the board when Buckley answered again with 36 seconds left making it 3-2 at the end of the first.

The Penmen dominated the second quarter with goals by Buckley, Nicholson and Joyce while they managed to hold the Mavericks scoreless, making it 5-3 going into halftime.

To start the third quarter, the Penmen notched two goals from LaTorre and Buckley making it a 5-0 scoring run to increase the lead to 7-3 with 11:23 remaining. Mercy was able to answer with a 4-0 run of their own as Jesse Wood led the charge with one goal and two assists. The Penmen and the Mavericks were tied 7-7 going into the fourth quarter of play.

Mercy took a quick 8-7 lead with a goal by Wood with 13:51 remaining as this started a back and forth final frame. The Penmen got goals from LaTorre, Jacobs and Allen to go up 10-8 with 8:40 remaining in the game. A score by Mercy's Kyle Stockton cut the Penmen lead to one, but Joyce followed up scoring his second goal of the game to make it 11-9 with 5:08 to play. Stockton scored again for the Mavericks, but Joyce was able to put it away for SNHU with 14 seconds to play. Nick Wilcox put in the final goal for the Mavericks, but it was too late as the Penmen secured the win.

Morgan Weireter (Oak Park, Calif.) earned the win and had 20 saves in net for the Penmen, while A.J. Pellati recorded 12 saves for the Mavericks.

The Penmen return to action Saturday, April 26 when they host American Int'l College for a Northeast-10 Conference game at 1:00 p.m. on Larkin Field for the last regular season home game.
