NEW LONDON, N.H. – Junior Jake Nutter (Bedford, N.H.) became the fifth Southern New Hampshire University men's golf player to earn Gordie McCullough Northeast-10 Player of the Year honors as he led the Penmen to a third-place finish at the NE-10 Championship that concluded Sunday at Lake Sunapee Country Club. Bentley University captured the tourney title with a two-day total of 593, followed by Le Moyne College (606), the Penmen (608), Assumption College (610) and Franklin Pierce University (610).
Nutter, who carded a 66 on Sunday, finished with a two-day total of 134, setting or tying three conference records in the process. His six-under 134 broke the two-day record of five-under 136 set by current SNHU head coach Matt Arvanitis at the 2001 championship. His nine-shot margin of victory broke the previous record of six shots, while his Sunday round of 66 matches a conference record for a single round set three times, most recently by Ryan Snouffer of Adelphi on 2013, as well as Chris Rivard of SNHU in 2002.
Arvanitis was named NE-10 Player of the Year in 2001, while Rivard earned the honor the following year. Jeff Sullivan captured medalist honors at the 2003 championship, while Shane Winslow prevailed in a tiebreaker in 2009.
Nutter posted six birdies and just two bogeys on Sunday, including birdies on three of the final five holes.
Senior Austin Fox (Hooksett, N.H.) also earned Second Team All-Conference honors with a score of 155 after carding a 78 on Sunday. Scott Underhill (Bedford, N.H.) finished at 83 on Sunday and a two-day total of 157, while John Clancy (Sandwich, Mass.) carded an 82 in round two and a 162 for the tournament. Ernie Lupi (Bradford, Mass.) rounded out the Penmen finishers at 100.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action next Saturday and Sunday when it hosts the Northeast Challenge at Concord Country Club in Concord, N.H.
