Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) scored 12 of her 14 points after halftime as Southern New Hampshire University rallied from a 35-28 halftime deficit to post a 64-63 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Pace University Tuesday night at the Goldstein Center. The Penmen snapped a two-game slide and now stand 9-8 and 4-7 in the NE-10, while the Setters fall to 8-8 and 3-6 in the league.
Springfield was 5-10 from the floor, including 2-3 behind the arc, over the final 20 minutes as she led a trio of Penmen in double figures. Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) recorded 13 points off the bench, while Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) added 11 points. Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) chipped in with nine points for Southern New Hampshire.
Gabriella Rubin led three Pace players in double figures with a game-high 16 points.
After using a 9-2 run to put itself up 62-55 with 2:30 remaining, the Penmen trailed 63-62 with 44 seconds to go when eight straight Setter points capped by a Christina Rubin conventional three-point play gave the hosts the lead. On the next Penmen possession, Wiseman was fouled going to the basket with 28.9 seconds to go. After making the first free throw, Wiseman missed the second, but Doherty corralled the rebound. Wiseman was again fouled going to the basket, and made 1-of-2 to make it 64-63 with 12 seconds to go. Margo Hackett went to the basket for Pace for the game-winning layup, but was off the mark, and the Setters were unable to get a shot off in the final 0.4 seconds.
SNHU and Pace were tied 53-53 with just over eight minutes to go when a Springfield three ignited a 9-2 run that was capped by a Ryan basket with 2:30 to go that gave the Penmen a 62-55 lead. The Penmen trailed by as many as nine early in the second half and were down 42-33 when nine straight points capped by a Wiseman layup at the 14:41 mark tied the game 42-42.
Pace jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but SNHU came back and the two teams traded the lead seven times over much of the opening stanza. The Setters closed the first half on a 12-4 run and carried a 35-28 lead into the locker room.
Southern New Hampshire shot 51.7% over the final 20 minutes and 45.6% for the game while limiting Pace to 40.3% shooting from the floor. The Penmen took seven more trips to the free throw line, but went just 9-17 at the stripe, while the Setters were 7-10. SNHU held a 41-35 rebounding advantage.
SNHU returns home Saturday afternoon when it hosts Concordia (N.Y.) College in a 1:30 non-conference contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
