Junior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and sophomore Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) each registered 15 kills, but the Southern New Hampshire University volleyball team was downed by the University of New Haven, 3-1, Friday evening at Charger Gymnasium. Southern New Hampshire took the first set, 26-24, before New Haven pulled out the next three sets at 26-24, 25-21, 25-23.
Salamun hit a team-best .407 to go along with a trio of service aces and a pair of blocks, while Coronis came up with three blocks. Senior Catherine Cotton (Murphy, Texas) posted a double-double with a match-high 49 assists and 14 digs. Three other Penmen, including seniors Maeghan Higgins (Hesperia, Calif.) and Nina McGouldrick (Richardson, Texas) and sophomore Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), tallied double-digit dig totals with 19, 18 and 17, respectively.
SNHU jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set, highlighted by kills from Cotton, Coronis and McGouldrick, but the Chargers answered with a 9-5 run to grab an 11-10 lead. The Penmen reclaimed the lead, but would find themselves down 23-19 before a pair of Salamun service aces capped a 5-0 blitz that would put the visitors in front, 24-23. New Haven would pull even, but two Coronis Kills gave Southern New Hampshire the set.
With the second set tied, 4-4, two McGouldrick kills would power a 4-0 spurt that put SNHU in front, 8-4. The lead would grow to six at 14-8 and the Penmen later looked like they would go up 2-0 in the match with a 22-16 lead. The Chargers had other ideas, however, as a 5-0 rush would pull them to within one. The Penmen would take the next two points to push New Haven to the brink in set No. 2 at 24-21, but the Chargers would close the set on a 5-0 run to even the match.
Neither side led by more than three in the third set until New Haven ran off three straight points to open a 24-19 advantage. A kill from sophomore Victoria Wehrmann (Dallas, Texas) halted the stretch and was the first of two straight Penmen points that cut it to three, but the Chargers would finish the set with a kill from Meghan Kennelly.
New Haven put together an early 6-3 lead in set No. 4, but a pair of kills from freshman Holly Adams (Hopkinton, Mass.) powered a 4-0 run that put SNHU in front, 7-6. The edge was still one at 10-9 when five straight points gave the Chargers the largest lead of the set to that point at 14-10. Then Penmen would get no closer than three until a 5-0 stretch – with kills from Adams and Wehrmann – leapfrogged Southern New Hampshire into the lead at 20-19. That lead would be short-lived as a 4-0 counter-run put New Haven back in front, 23-20. Kills from sophomore Carolyn Scacchi (Peabody, Mass.), Coronis and Wehrmann would pull the Penmen within 24-23, but a Kennelly kill gave the match to New Haven.
Wehrmann tallied eight kills and nine digs for SNHU, while Kennelly amassed a match-high 21 kills for New Haven.
SNHU outhit New Haven in the first and fourth sets, but the Chargers held a slightly better mark, overall (.165-.156).
