Sophomore Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) scored a team-high 11 points as the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team won a low-scoring affair against the University of the Sciences, 57-40, at the Bridgeport Women's Basketball Classic on Sunday afternoon at Hubbell Gymnasium.
Stinson was 4-for-11 from the floor, including 1-for-2 from long range, and 2-for-2 at the line, while pulling down four rebounds and handing out a pair of assists. Junior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) contributed nine points (4-11 FG, 1-2 3-FG) for the Penmen.
Sarah Abbonizio led the Devils with a game-high 13 points.
USciences jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first 7:48 of the game as Laura Trisch and Abbonizio scored five and four points, respectively. Sophomore Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) dropped in a pair of layups to close the first-quarter scoring with Southern New Hampshire trailing, 13-9.
Four straight points from senior Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) powered a 6-0 run to begin the second quarter that was part of the overall 10-0 avalanche that gave Southern New Hampshire its first lead of the day at 15-13 with 6:48 to play in the second stanza. The Devils kept it close the rest of the half as the Penmen brought a 26-24 edge into the locker room.
The Southern New Hampshire lead was still two at 33-31 late in the third quarter when a 13-0 landslide that spanned into the fourth quarter broke the game open for the Penmen at 46-31 with 6:39 on the clock. Five different scorers contributed to the run, including freshman Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.), who netted four points during the stretch. USciences would not get closer than 12 the rest of the way and Southern New Hampshire closed the game on 7-2 swing to bring the margin to its final resting place.
Freshman Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) posted eight points (2-6 FG, 2-4 3- FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds and four assists off the bench, while Lorenzen added seven points (2-4 FG, 3-4 FT), six rebounds and five steals. Sophomore Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) also stuffed the stat sheet with six points (3-6 FG), nine boards and five assists. Doherty tallied six points (2-5 FG, 2-2 FT), three assists, two rebounds and two steals, with Conrad also chipping in six points (3-4 FG).
Notes:
- The Penmen begin the season 2-0 for the second straight year.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot USciences, 42.3 percent (22-52) to 25.8 percent (16-62), including 36.4 percent (4-11) to 12.9 percent (4-31) from deep.
-The Devils outrebounded the Penmen, 41-37, including 19-9 on the offensive glass. Southern New Hampshire won the paint (30-22) and used a much better assist-to-turnover ratio (15/15-7/19) for a 17-9 margin in points off turnovers.
-Through the first two games of the season, the Penmen are holding opponents to just an 8-for-52 (15.4%) clip from 3-point range.
What's Next:
The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Nov. 18 (5:30 p.m.) when they take on crosstown rival Saint Anselm College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. SNHU opens its home slate Friday, Nov. 20 (6 p.m.) when it plays host to Molloy College at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
