Senior Maeghan Higgins (Hesperia, Calif.) became the program's all-time digs leader and classmate Catherine Cotton (Murphy, Texas) recorded her third straight double-double, but the Southern New Hampshire University volleyball team was knocked out of the Northeast-10 Championship with a 3-1 loss at top-seeded Adelphi University on Tuesday evening at the Center for Recreation & Sport.

Higgins recorded 15 digs to finish with 1,637 for her career and move past Colleen Eddy (2003-06), who amassed 1,628 digs. Higgins also collected a match-high four service aces. Cotton handed out 35 assists and tallied up 11 digs. Cotton finished her career with 3,555 assists – more than double the next closest person to her in the all-time record book.

Junior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the team with 10 kills to go along with four digs, two block assists and a service ace. Sophomore Carolyn Scacchi (Peabody, Mass.) contributed eight kills, while senior Nina McGouldrick (Richardson, Texas) posted six kills and 11 digs. Sophomores Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) and Victoria Wehrmann (Dallas, Texas) also each had six kills, with Wehrmann adding a pair of block assists.

A Salamun service ace started the match on the right foot for the Penmen, who jumped out to a 5-2 lead. After Adelphi had cut its deficit to two later in the set, kills from Salamun, Coronis and sophomore Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) widened the gap to 12-7 and forced a Panther timeout. Southern New Hampshire was still up five when a 7-1 rush from Adelphi gave the hosts a 19-18 edge. The Penmen roared back with a 5-1 counter-run, which included a pair of kills from Salamun, and put the visitors back in front, 23-20. Two Adelphi errors gave Southern New Hampshire the final two points it needed to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Penmen went in front, 3-1, for the second straight set, but a 4-0 spurt gave Adelphi the lead for good. It was a two-point set later on w

hen a 5-0 run broke it open and put the Panthers up, 14-7. Adelphi had its largest lead of the set at 18-10 when a 6-1 surge pulled the Penmen within three, but that was as close as they would get before the Panthers took the set to even the match.

Southern New Hampshire again seized a 3-1 lead in set No. 3 and led, 7-5, before a 5-0 run put Adelphi on top by three. The Panthers stretched their lead to 17-12 and then led 19-15 when they closed the match with six straight points to push the Penmen to the brink.

The Penmen won the set's first point for the fourth straight time, but Adelphi would craft a 15-3 run to take a commanding lead out of the gate. A 7-2 Southern New Hampshire rally would slice its deficit to eight later in the set, but it was too little and too late as the Northeast-10 unbeaten captured two of the final three points to advance to the semifinal round.
