Score: Southern New Hampshire University 67, Franklin Pierce University 58
Records: SNHU 5-0 (2-0 Northeast-10), Franklin Pierce 1-2 (1-2 Northeast-10)
Freshman Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) poured in a career- and game-best 18 points and junior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) added 17 to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 67-58 conference road victory against Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday evening at The Fieldhouse. The Penmen are now 5-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Lorenzen, the reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, was an efficient 8 of 10 from the floor and 2 of 5 at the line to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Ryan shot 6-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-5 from the stripe, while tallying three rebounds and a pair of steals.
Kara Charette led the Ravens with 14 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.
The opening three-and-a-half minutes featured four lead changes and a tie until a 6-0 spurt put Franklin Pierce in front, 14-8, with 4:14 left in the first quarter. A three-point play from Lorenzen would get Southern New Hampshire as close as three, but the Ravens would carry a 20-15 lead into the second quarter.
A Charette layup 18 seconds into the second frame would give Franklin Pierce what would be its largest lead of the contest at nine, but four straight points from Lorenzen would kick off a 14-6 stretch for the Penmen that put them in the lead at 29-28 with 2:26 to go before the half. Lorenzen and sophomore Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) each contributed four points during the run, while Ryan and senior Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) added three apiece. The teams would then trade the lead three times until Franklin Pierce pulled a 34-33 edge into the locker room.
The entire third quarter was one large seesaw battle, with 12 lead changes and a pair of ties resulting in a 49-49 score at the end of three.
Southern New Hampshire seized control to start the fourth as two Lorenzen buckets triggered an 8-0 run that moved the Penmen out to a 57-49 lead with 7:12 remaining. A 7-0 counter-run by Franklin Pierce, which included the final four points coming from Charette, trimmed its deficit to just one, but again Lorenzen responded with two straight baskets to set off a 10-2 surge that capped the scoring and kept the Penmen perfect on the season.
Conrad finished with nine points (3-6 FG, 3-4 FT), while Doherty posted seven points (3-4 FG, 1-2 FT) and three boards. Sophomore Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) recorded five points (2-13 FG, 1-2 FT) and made up for a tough shooting night with seven assists, four rebounds, two steals and a block. Freshman Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) added five points (2-5 FG, 1-3 3-FG), seven assists and four rebounds.
