Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-8 decision to No. 10 Mercy College in nonconference action at Mercy Field on Tuesday. The Penmen shift to 1-4 on the season, while the Mavericks improve to 5-1.
Senior Jeremy Buckley (Norwell, Mass.) notched a pair of goals and dished out an assist, and sophomore Cameron McGuire (Melrose, Mass.) collected the first two goals of his collegiate career to lead Southern New Hampshire.
After falling behind 8-0, the Penmen broke through late in the second quarter. Freshman Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.) collected a feed from Buckley and fired home his first of the season with 2:58 left in the half.
Mercy opened up the third with a pair of goals in 1:51 before Buckley started a run of three-straight Southern New Hampshire scores. Buckley tallied his 13th of the year with 10:45 left in the period, and McGuire followed with his first at 8:51. Freshman Khyan Gaddy (Albany, N.Y.) closed out the quarter with a man-down strike with just over three and a half minutes to go to trim the deficit to 10-4 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Mavericks responded with a goal 55 seconds into the fourth, and junior Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) answered for the Penmen 2:21 later when he took a pass from sophomore Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) and deposited it in the back of the net for his sixth of the season. After a Jesse Wood goal pushed Mercy ahead 12-5, McGuire netted his second of the day with 5:22 to play. Kevin Gluckert and Owen Valance closed out the scoring for the Mavericks with goals at 4:56 and 3:01. Southern New Hampshire ended the game with a pair of scores from junior Eric Johnson (West Suffield, Conn.) and Buckley during the last minute of play to provide a 14-8 final.
Senior Crosby Nicholson (Andover, Mass.) registered nine saves in the Penmen cage and also raked in a team-high five groundballs. Freshman Chris West (Albany, N.Y.) scooped up four loose balls and caused two turnovers in the setback, and seniors Matthew Auger (Nashua, N.H.) and Matthew Wood (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) also corralled four groundballs.
Wood powered the Mercy attack with two goals, two assists and eight groundballs. Robert Rossi registered a hat trick in the victory, and Michael Schneider stopped nine shots to up his record to 3-0.
Southern New Hampshire resumes play on Saturday when it hosts Molloy College in at Larkin Field at 1 p.m. The Mavericks are also back in action on Saturday when they travel to Dowling College for a 1 p.m. faceoff.
