Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Visiting Saint Michael's College erased a seven goal first half deficit and held off Southern New Hampshire University for a 12-11 Northeast-10 men's lacrosse victory Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field. The Purple Knights upped their record to 4-2 and 3-1 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 1-7 and 1-4 in the league.
Tom Fitzgerald and Matt Dromeshauser led a balanced Purple Knight attack with three goals and an assist apiece, while Mark Yetter had two goals and two assists.
Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) led Southern New Hampshire with three goals and four assists on the afternoon, while Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) scored three times on the afternoon. Phil LaTorre (Londonderry, N.H.) scored both of his goals in the fourth quarter and added an assist, while Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) also scored twice. Cory Allen (Suffield, Conn.) added a goal and two assists.
Saint Michael's trailed 8-1 with 5:12 left in the second quarter following Joyce's third goal of the game that capped a 5-0 Penmen run, but the Purple Knights scored twice in an 18-second span to make it 8-3 with 4:28 left in the half. That would remain the score headed into halftime.
Trailing 8-5 after scoring the first two goals of the half, the Purple Knights exploded for five goals in the final 2:13 of the third quarter to take a 10-8 lead. Dromeshauser scored as time expired in the third quarter to cap the run of nine straight goals by the guests.
LaTorre scored 1:11 into the final frame to make it a 10-9 game, but Daegan Goodman scored at the 12:38 mark to make it a two-goal lead. LaTorre struck again at 10:15 to again halve the gap, but Dromeshauser scored his third goal of the game at the 4:08 mark to make it 12-10.
Trainer converted a man-up advantage with 2:59 left to again pull Southern New Hampshire within a goal, with Joyce assisting on the tally. The Penmen won the ensuing faceoff and LaTorre got a shot on frame, but was stopped by Saint Michael's goalie T.J. Bicknell. After a Purple Knight turnover, the Penmen got two more shots on goal around the 1:30 mark, but both were stopped by Bicknell.
Bicknell made 19 saves, while Penmen counterpart Crosby Nicholson (Andover, Mass.) made 10 saves as SNHU held a 45-41 shot advantage. Southern New Hampshire was 2-2 with the man advantage, while Saint Michael's went just 1-4 on man-up opportunities.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it faces Saint Anselm College at Larkin Field in a game originally scheduled to be played on the Saint Anselm campus. The Queen City Cup matchup is slated for 4:00 pm.
