NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Marissa Benson (Barre, Vt.) of the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team was recently named a Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Scholar of Distinction, it was announced recently. In addition, nine Penmen players were selected to the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA National Academic Squad.
As a team, the Penmen were one of 20 Division II teams to receive the National Academic Team Award for having over a 3.0 team GPA.
In order to be named a Scholar of Distinction, a student-athlete must have achieved a 3.90 GPA or higher through the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year. Benson, a junior defender, appeared in 14 games for the Penmen this season as they completed their first varsity campaign since 1981. Benson is one of just 40 student-athletes honored at the NCAA Division II level.
Selected to the National Academic Squad for compiling at least a 3.30 GPA through the fall semester were Benson, Molly Byrne (Keene, N.H.), Melissa Chisholm (Norwood, Mass.), Mikeala Gauvain (Salem, N.H.), Sarah Gluck (East Bridgewater, Mass.), Alanna Lovejoy (Derry, N.H.), Cassandra Nickerson (Newton, N.H.), Alexis Soucy (Windsor, Maine) and Austen Theroux (Goffstown, N.H.).
