MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Cory Allen (Suffield, Conn.) scored three times, including twice in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but James Peters struck with 1:32 left to play in double-overtime to lift Saint Anselm College a 12-11 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action at Larkin Field on Wednesday. The Hawks improve to 1-5 and 1-3 in league play, while the Penmen shift to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the NE-10.
Allen also assisted on two goals to finish with five points to lead the Southern New Hampshire attack. Sophomore Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) chipped in with two goals and a pair of helpers, while junior Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.) added three points in the setback. The Penmen overcame a five-goal deficit on four separate occasions to force extra time.
After Saint Anselm jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 6:06 to go in the first, Heckman collected a feed from Allen to put Southern New Hampshire on the board at 5:07. The Hawks closed out the quarter with a pair of goals to take a 5-1 advantage before Geoff Kennedy converted a pass from Peters 54 seconds into the second to push Saint Anselm ahead, 6-1.
Malave responded with his first of the afternoon 2:05 into the stanza to trim the deficit to four. James Stokes answered 13 seconds later for Saint Anselm to regain the five-goal edge, but Malave tallied his second of the quarter from Joyce with 11:59 left before intermission to make it 7-3. After Alex Pacitti gave the Hawks an 8-3 lead midway through the second, freshman Cam Rewucki (Dover, N.H.) drilled home the first goal of his career with five minutes remaining before the half. Less than a minute later, James Olsen netted his first of two goals to push Saint Anselm ahead, 9-4. Heckman closed out the first half with a man-up marker at 2:35 to make it 9-5 at the break.
After the two teams went scoreless for the first 5:15 of the third, the Penmen went on a four-goal run to knot the score. Joyce started the scoring with his 13th of the year from Allen, and graduate student Phil LaTorre (Londonderry, N.H.) brought Southern New Hampshire within two when he buried his sixth of the season 1:18 later. Allen followed with his first of the day with 7:34 left in the quarter, and LaTorre evened the score at nine when he took a pass from Malave and potted his second in less than two minutes.
Stokes broke the Penmen run with 4:31 left in the third to put the Hawks back in front, and Olsen made it 11-9 just 18 seconds into the fourth. Allen cut the deficit to one with 13:58 remaining in regulation, and he forced overtime when he took a pass from Heckman and fired his 14th goal of the season past James O'Neill with 2:35 to play.
The team teams held each other off the board through the first four-minute overtime period and 2:28 of the second extra session before Peters scored the golden goal with less than two minutes remaining to give Saint Anselm the 12-11 decision.
Senior Crosby Nicholson (Andover, Mass.) stopped 10 shots in the Southern New Hampshire cage, seven of which came during the second half and overtimes. Senior Matthew Auger (Nashua, N.H.) raked in five groundballs and caused two turnovers for the Penmen, while sophomore Patrick Goff (Nashua, N.H.) also picked up five loose balls and won 10 faceoffs in the setback.
O'Neill registered 21 saves in goal for the Hawks and corralled four groundballs. Ben Warren led the Saint Anselm offense with four points on two goals and two assists, while Peters and Stokes each finished with a pair of goals and an assist in the victory.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Pace University in a Northeast-10 Conference clash at 1 p.m. on Larkin Field. The Hawks are also back in action on Saturday when they make the trip to Le Moyne College for a noon faceoff with the Dolphins.
