Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. — Sean Delea scored a man-up goal with six seconds remaining in regulation to break an 11-11 tie and lift Franklin Pierce University to a 12-11 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse contest at Larkin Field on Tuesday. The Penmen move to 1-11 overall and 1-8 in the league, while the Ravens up their record to 10-2 and 7-2 in conference play.
Sophomore Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) led the Southern New Hampshire attack with four goals, while junior Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) scored twice and added an assist in the setback.
Joyce put the Penmen ahead early with his 17th goal of the season 1:29 into the opening quarter. Franklin Pierce closed out the first quarter with three consecutive scores, two off the stick of Eddie Noonan, to take a 3-1 lead into the second.
Southern New Hampshire trimmed the deficit to a single goal just over 30 seconds into the second stanza, as Joyce converted a feed from freshman Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.). After Louis Palumbo reclaimed a two-goal lead for the visitors seven seconds later, Malave found the back of the net with help from Joyce with 13:29 left in the second. The Penmen knotted the score at four on a goal from sophomore Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.), and retook the lead, 5-4, with 5:22 left to play before the half on Heckman's first of the night.
After the Ravens evened things up 3:15 into the second half, freshman Chris West (Albany, N.Y.) and Heckman scored back-to-back goals to push Southern New Hampshire ahead by a pair. Casey Burnett cut the Penmen lead to 7-6 midway through the third before Heckman and Sean Delea traded goals in the final four minutes, and the game went into the final 15 minutes with SNHU ahead, 8-7.
In the fourth, sophomore Patrick Goff (Nashua, N.H.) won the opening face-off and went straight in on goal and buried his first of the season to make it 9-7. Franklin Pierce made it a one-goal game with 10:54 left in regulation, but West notched his second of the half less than a minute later to put the Penmen back on top by two. After the Ravens battled back to tie the game at 10 with 5:11 to go, Heckman rifled home his fourth of the night at 2:58 to regain the lead for Southern New Hampshire, 11-10. Noonan tallied the equalizer for FPU with 1:47 left to play before Delea scored the game-winner.
Senior Crosby Nicholson (Andover, Mass.) registered seven saves in the Penmen cage, and Goff won 13 of his 25 trips to the face-off X while also corralling nine groundballs. Noonan scored four times and Delea chipped in with a hat trick in the victory for the Ravens. Don Denman earned his 10th win of the season for Franklin Pierce after turning aside 10 shots.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Saturday when it makes the trip to Adelphi University for a 1 p.m. face-off with the Panthers. The Ravens also resume play on Saturday when they host Saint Anselm College at noon.
