Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Junior Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) scored four goals and assisted on a fifth, but a six-goal fourth quarter lifted Adelphi University to a 19-13 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse action at Motamed Field on Saturday. The Penmen shift to 1-12 overall and 1-9 in the NE-10, while the Panthers improve to 10-2 and 8-2 in league play.
Joyce led the Southern New Hampshire attack with five points, while sophomore Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) added three goals in the setback. Senior Crosby Nicholson (Andover, Mass.) stopped 13 shots in the Penmen cage and collected a team-high four groundballs.
After Adelphi took a 1-0 lead just 12 seconds into the contest, freshman Corey Cairo (Wading River, N.Y.) evened the score at a goal apiece with his second tally of the season with 12:08 left in the opening quarter. Salvatore Tuttle put the Panthers back in front by a goal 1:15 later, but Southern New Hampshire responded with four-straight goals to take a 5-2 lead. Jacobs started the run with a man-down goal at 9:04 before Joyce buried his first of the afternoon with 7:43 remaining. Sophomore John Marcone (Canton, Mass.) made it 4-2 with just over three and a half minutes to go in the first, and a man-up strike from Joyce pushed the Penmen advantage to three with less than two minutes left on the clock. Adelphi trimmed the gap to a pair just before the horn sounded, as Cory Stavis found the back of the net with eight seconds to play.
The Panthers made it a one-goal game 1:22 into the second quarter before Jacobs cashed in on his second of the game to make it 6-4. Adelphi scored back-to-back goals to tie things up at six with 5:20 left before the break, but Marcone set up sophomore Cameron McGuire (Melrose, Mass.) for his third goal of the season to give Southern New Hampshire the lead back, 7-6. After Tuttle collected his second of the game on an extra-man opportunity at 3:50, Joyce closed out the half with his third of the day to put the Penmen in front, 8-7, at the intermission.
Nick Susko scored his first of three goals for the Panthers less than 20 seconds into the second half to deadlock the score at eight. Jacobs added his third with 12:54 to go in the quarter, and after Adelphi tied it again with 9:36 left, Joyce made it 10-9 at 8:09. Susko's second with less than four minutes remaining knotted the score at 10, but sophomore Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) converted a feed from Joyce to regain the advantage for Southern New Hampshire. The Panthers took the lead for the first time since the opening five minutes of play with two straight scores at 2:30 and 1:29 before graduate student Phil LaTorre (Londonderry, N.H.) potted his eighth of the year to tie the score for the ninth time in the game, 12-12. Adelphi closed out the game on a 7-1 run, including five-straight goals from the end of the third to the midway point of the fourth to take a 19-13 decision.
Jacobs, sophomore Patrick Goff (Nashua, N.H.) and classmate Bryan Sjoblom (Groton, Mass.) each raked in four groundballs for Southern New Hampshire, while senior Matthew Auger (Nashua, N.H.) picked up a pair of loose balls and caused two turnovers. Tuttle led the way for the Panthers with three goals and two assists, and Susko chipped in with four points on three goals and an assist. DJ Mauro earned the win in goal for Adelphi with seven second-half saves, John English controlled the faceoff X with 24 wins in 35 trips.
The Penmen are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Post University for a 4 p.m. contest against the Eagles. The Panthers wrap up a four-game homestand on Tuesday against the New York Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.
