Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. — Junior Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) each registered four points, but a four-goal effort from Matt Dente lifted Bentley University to an 11-7 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse action on Tuesday. The Penmen move to 1-10 and 1-7 in the NE-10, while the Falcons up their record to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Joyce led the Southern New Hampshire attack with three goals and an assist, and Heckman chipped in with a pair of scores and two helpers.
After falling behind 1-0 less than four minutes into the contest, the Penmen evened the score when freshman Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.) set up Joyce for the equalizer with 8:27 left to go in the quarter. Just over a minute after Joyce's 13th of the season, Chris Wiggins responded for Bentley with his second of the night to push the Falcons back ahead by one. The hosts increased their advantage to 3-1 with 6:07 remaining on an unassisted strike from Joe DiRaimo, and carried a two-goal cushion into the second.
Heckman brought Southern New Hampshire back within a single score 1:01 into the second quarter when he collected a feed from Joyce and deposited his 12th into the back of the cage. The Penmen knotted the score at three midway through the stanza, as Heckman fed classmate Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) for his first of the year. The Falcons closed out the half with three consecutive goals, and held a 6-3 lead at intermission.
Joyce opened the third by potting his second of the game to cut the deficit to 6-4 at 13:42. With eight minutes left to go in the quarter, Bobby Hinds regained the three-goal edge for Bentley and Dente's second made it 8-4 two minutes later. Heckman was able to trim the Falcons' lead to three with less than five minutes to play, but it would be the closest Southern New Hampshire would get the rest of the game, as Bentley added a pair of goals in the final 3:26 of the third to take a 10-5 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.
In the fourth, Joyce tallied a man-up marker with help from Heckman 4:35 in before senior Anthony Bevilacqua (Medway, Mass.) buried the first goal of his career with 2:18 left in regulation. Dente added his fourth of the evening with under a minute to go to provide the final margin of victory for the Falcons.
Senior Crosby Nicholson (Andover, Mass.) stopped 18 shots in the Southern New Hampshire cage and also picked up two groundballs in the setback. Senior Jeremy Buckley (Norwell, Mass.) collected a team-high three loose balls for the Penmen, who were successful on eight-of-nine man-down opportunities and 16-of-19 clear attempts.
Southern New Hampshire is idle until next Tuesday when it welcomes Franklin Pierce University to Larkin Field for a 7 p.m. face-off with the Ravens. Bentley is back in action on Saturday when it plays host to Saint Michael's College at 7 p.m.
