MANCHESTER, N.H. – Four members of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team earned All-Region honors as three organizations announced their All-Region teams in the past week. Graduate student Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.) and sophomore Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) were unanimous First Team selections in teams selected by ABCA/Rawlings, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Daktronics/D2CCA. In addition, sophomore Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.) was a Second Team selection on the ABCA/Rawlings squad, while senior Cole Warren (Bedford, N.H.) was named Honorable Mention by the NCBWA.
Montville, a Northeast-10 First Team selection at first base, also saw time in the outfield and at designated hitter this season. Appearing in 37 contests, Montville batted a team-high .375 with six home runs and 36 RBI, and he ranked second in the NE-10 in batting average, first in on-base percentage (.512) and third in slugging percentage (.625). On April 22 Montville was named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week, while he recorded 16 multi-hit performances in 2015.
Helms, an outfielder and NE-10 First Team selection, appeared in 43 of 45 games for Southern New Hampshire and batted .350 with five home runs and 29 runs batted in on the season. He ranked 12th in the conference in batting average, while ranking fourth in the league in on-base percentage (.464) and fifth in slugging percentage (.567). Helms recorded 19 multi-hit games on the season, including 10 in SNHU's last 14 regular season games.
Person, splitting time between the rotation and the bullpen, compiled an 8-1 record with a 1.26 earned run average in 11 appearances (five starts) while notching 64 strikeouts in 57.1 innings of work. A semifinalist for the Brett Tomko Award, given annually to the top pitcher in NCAA Division II, Person ranked fourth in the NE-10 in ERA and fifth in strikeouts per nine (10.05). Person was a Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conference selection.
Warren led the Penmen rotation in 2015. In 10 starts, he compiled a 2.11 earned run average and struck out 84 batters in 59.2 innings of work while going 2-2. Warren struck out at least 10 batters on five occasions, including a season-high 13 strikeouts in seven innings against Mercy College on February 21. He also tossed five no-hit innings against Saint Anselm College on April 16, striking out 11. Warren's 84 strikeouts ranked him third in the NE-10, while he led the conference in strikeouts per nine innings (12.67).
Southern New Hampshire finished 31-14 overall and made its fourth straight NCAA East Regional appearance.
