Juniors Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France), as well as freshman Bas Van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands), all dropped just one game in singles action as the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team recorded a 9-0 victory against crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College in a crucial Queen City Cup win for the Penmen on Wednesday afternoon at the Saint Anselm Tennis Courts.
Juniors Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) started out the match on the right foot as they defeated Alex Pearson and Brian Kavanagh, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. Aubron and Van Biezen doubled up Adam Weinstein and Daniel Kmetz, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles, while Marreiros and classmate Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) pulled out an 8-6 victory over Eric Howes and Kyle Harris at No. 1 doubles.
Ricardo Marreiros kept the momentum going with a 6-0, 6-1 No. 1 singles win against Howes. Aubron was also a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4 singles against Kavanagh, while Van Biezen downed Harris, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
Fernandes triumphed over Weinstein, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, with Miguel Marreiros rolling to a 6-0, 6-2 No. 3 singles win. Reichentahl put the finishing touches on the match with a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Benji Page at No. 6.
Notes:
-The Penmen begin the season 4-0 for the first time since 2013-14.
-The win earns Southern New Hampshire a pair of points in the Queen City Cup standings as it pulls into a 5-5 tie with Saint Anselm in the battle for Manchester supremacy.
