Women's Basketball Moves to 2-0 with 79-52 Defeat of Mercy

Senior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) poured in 20 points and sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) registered her first double-double of the season to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 79-52 victory over Mercy College on Sunday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.

Ryan was an efficient 7-for-12 from the field, including 6-for-10 from long distance, while stuffing the stat sheet with five assists, three steals, two blocks and two rebounds. Lorenzen posted 17 points (6-7 FG, 5-5 FT) and 13 boards, while freshman Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) was in double figures for the second straight game with 14 points (5-8 FG, 4-7 3-FG).

Chi-La Bady led the Mavericks with 14 points, while Destinee Hall added 13.

Neither team led by more than three in an opening quarter that featured five lead changes and a trio of ties. Dean buried a triple with 35 seconds left to knot the game at 16 before Bady dropped in a layup with 21 seconds on the clock to give Mercy an 18-16 edge after one.

Another Dean 3-pointer opened the second-quarter scoring and gave the Penmen a one-point lead. With the margin still at one later in the stanza, Southern New Hampshire used an 11-3 run –capped by four straight points from Lorenzen – to open a 35-26 advantage with 1:02 remaining before the break. SNHU would carry a 37-28 lead into halftime. 

A 7-0 run from the Penmen just over two minutes into the third quarter ballooned their lead to 15 at 47-32 midway through the frame, but four straight points from Hall led a 6-0 spurt that trimmed the Mercy deficit to 47-38 with 3:07 on the clock. SNHU answered back with a 5-0 run to nudge the lead to 14 and eventually led, 54-42, heading into the fourth quarter. 

Southern New Hampshire dominated the final frame as an 18-2 blitz – with Dean scoring six points and Lorenzen contributing five – extended the lead to a game-high 29 at 75-46 with 4:11 to go.

Junior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) tallied seven points (3-6 FG, 1-2 3-FG) and four assists, while freshman Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added seven points (2-7 FG, 2-5 3-FG, 1-2 FT), two rebounds and two assists.

Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire begins the season 2-0 for the third straight year.
-SNHU outshot Mercy, 45.9 percent (28-61) to 24.3 percent (17-70), including 40.6 percent (13-32 to 20.8 percent (5-24) from beyond the arc.
-The Mavericks outrebounded the Penmen, 47-40, including 23-10 on the offensive glass, while Southern New Hampshire won the paint (26-20) and featured a much better assist-to-turnover ratio (21/14-5/17).

The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Nov. 16 (5:30 p.m.) when they play host to crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College at the Fieldhouse in a game that will be televised on NESNplus and NESN National.
