Score: Saint Anselm College 73, Southern New Hampshire University 71
Records: Saint Anselm 3-0 (1-0 Northeast-10), SNHU 2-1 (0-1 Northeast-10)
Freshman Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) netted a career-best 18 points and sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) scored 17 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team fell to Saint Anselm College in the final seconds, 73-71, Wednesday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Dean was an efficient 6-for-10 from the field, including a blistering 6-for-8 from beyond the arc, while grabbing four rebounds. Lorenzen was 6 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 6 at the line to go along with eight rebounds. Junior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) was also in double figures with 13 points (5-9 FG, 1-4 3-FG, 2-2 FT), four steals, two assists and two rebounds.
Candace Andrews, who scored her 1,000th career point in the contest, led Saint Anselm with 18 points – all coming in the first half.
Trailing by a game-high 18 points in the third quarter, the Penmen closed the frame with a 6-0 streak that trimmed their deficit to 59-47. Southern New Hampshire opened the fourth with a 10-0 run that featured points from four different scorers and slashed the gap to just a pair at 59-57 with 7:25 remaining.
Saint Anselm responded with a 9-3 counter-run that expanded its lead to 68-60 with 3:16 on the clock, but SNHU would not go quietly as four straight points from senior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) sparked a 9-2 rush that pulled the Penmen within one at 70-69 with 21 seconds to go. After Ali Glennon hit 1 of 2 at the line to make it a two-point game five seconds later, Stinson drained a pair at the stripe with 10 seconds remaining to knot the game at 71.
Glennon would again sink 1 of 2 at the line with seven seconds to play, giving the Penmen a chance to win it. A turnover and another Saint Anselm free throw with seven-tenths of a second on the clock would win it for the visitors, however.
Ryan tallied four points (1-6 FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.
After Saint Anselm built an 11-5 lead in the opening 3:50, a Lorenzen layup and 3-pointer from Dean cut the Southern New Hampshire deficit to 11-10 with 3:51 to play in the opening quarter. The Hawks would run off seven straight before another Dean triple made the gap five at 18-13 in favor of Saint Anselm after one.
Saint Anselm would nudge its lead to nine before an 8-2 run – buoyed by 3-pointers from freshman Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) – pulled the Penmen to within 35-32 with under a minute to go before the break. The Hawks would score the final four of the half to take a 39-32 lead into halftime.
After another Dean trifecta brought Southern New Hampshire within four less than three minutes into the third quarter, Saint Anselm ripped off a balanced 16-2 run that featured seven different scorers and stretched the lead to 59-41 with 2:03 on the clock. Buckets from Stinson, Camara and Lorenzen would trigger the 16-0 landslide and make it a 12-point game at 59-47 going into the final frame.
Terry chipped in six points (2-7 FG, 2-6 3-FG), three steals, two rebounds and two assists, while Camara and junior Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) each added five points.
