Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) notched her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to Tuesday evening's 65-56 victory against in-state rival Franklin Pierce University at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Lorenzen was 5-for-15 from the floor, but cleaned up at the line as she was 10-for-13, while adding four assists. Freshmen Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) posted 15 points (6-9 FG, 3-4 3-FG), a career-high seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Cameryn Wilson led the Ravens with 12 points, while Dana Campbell added 11.
A 3-pointer from junior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) opened the scoring and sparked an 8-0 run for the Penmen over the first two minutes of the contest. Franklin Pierce had whittled its deficit to three two minutes later when six points from Lorenzen powered a 12-0 rush that opened the Southern New Hampshire lead to 22-7 with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter. After a Campbell 3-pointer had made it a 12-point game, the Ravens scored the final four points of the frame to trim the deficit to 27-19 at the end of one.
After a Mikayla Deguire bucket broke a nearly-five-minute-long drought for both teams, a pair of treys from Dean bookended a 9-3 run that stretched the Southern New Hampshire advantage to 38-24 with exactly a minute on the clock. SNHU would carry a 38-26 lead into the locker room.
A Dean trifecta would cap an 8-2 run to begin the second half and give Southern New Hampshire its largest lead of the contest at 46-28 with 4:49 to play in the third quarter. Four points from Wilson fueled an 8-0 run that sliced the Franklin Pierce deficit to 10 at 46-36, but SNHU would lead it, 50-38, heading to the final frame.
SNHU bumped the lead to a quarter-high 15 at 65-50 with 1:32 to play before the Ravens scored the final six points of the game.
Stinson, senior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) and freshman Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) all chipped in five points, while juniors Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) and Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) and sophomore Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) added four each.
Notes:
-Franklin Pierce narrowly outshot Southern New Hampshire, 40.4 percent (23-57) to 38.6 percent (22-57), while SNHU returned the favor from deep, 40 percent (6-15) to 27.3 percent (3-11).
-Neither team shot it particularly well from the stripe, but the Penmen sank twice as many free throws as the Ravens and held a 65.2 percent (15-23) to 58.3 percent (7-12) advantage.
-SNHU held a 40-37 edge on the glass, while Franklin Pierce won the paint, 32-30. The Penmen also had a slightly better assist-to-turnover ratio (14/21-10/23), but owned a massive 27-6 margin in points off turnovers.
