Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) went off for a career-high 30 points as the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team posted a 77-67 non-conference victory against Felician University on Wednesday evening at Job Gymnasium.
Lorenzen went 11-for-17 from the field, including 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 7-for-9 from the stripe, while grabbing four rebounds. Freshman Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) joined her in double digits with 10 points (3-6 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 2-2 FT) in just 12 minutes of action after missing the previous four games with an injury.
Marya Trapp paced the Golden Falcons with 17 points and 10 boards.
Trapp gave Felician its only lead of the game – 2-0 – just 17 seconds in before Lorenzen converted a three-point play to spark a 10-3 run that was capped by a trey from sophomore Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.), which gave Southern New Hampshire an early 10-5 lead less than three minutes in. Junior Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) contributed four points during the stretch.
A 7-2 counter-run from the Golden Falcons left the score tied at 12-all midway through the opening quarter, but a 3-pointer from freshman Tessa Stewart Morrison (Ashburton, New Zealand) gave the Penmen the lead with 4:28 to go and triggered a balanced 14-3 avalanche that ended the frame with SNHU leading, 26-18. Six different scorers comprised the run, with Stewart Morrison and Lorenzen leading the way with three points apiece.
Felician came out of the gates in the second quarter on an 8-2 run to trim its deficit to a pair before three straight points from Lorenzen nudged the lead to five. Southern New Hampshire would eventually carry a 33-28 advantage into the break.
The Penmen nudged their lead to seven on a tip-in by senior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) to begin the second half, but a 5-0 spurt later in the stanza from Felician knotted the game at 37 with 5:35 to go in the third. SNHU responded with a 10-2 rush – highlighted by 3-pointers from freshman Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and junior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) – to open a 47-39 lead with 1:34 to play. Southern New Hampshire would bring a 50-42 lead into the final frame.
Felician would get as close as four in the fourth quarter, but five straight points from Lorenzen would spark an 11-4 run that was capped by a pair of 3-pointers from Dean, to make it 65-54 with 4:24 on the clock. The Penmen would grab their largest lead of the contest at 73-59 with 1:10 remaining on a pair of Lorenzen free throws and cruise from there.
Terry tallied nine points (3-8 FG, 1-6 3-FG, 2-2 FT) and matched her career best with five assists, while Stinson netted eight points (3-6 FG, 2-3 3-FG) to go along with three rebounds and two helpers. Camara again submitted an all-around performance of five points (2-4 FG, 1-2 3-FG), seven rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. Ryan chimed in with four points (2-6 FG), six boards and two assists, with sophomore Aaliyah Paxton (Hainesport, N.J.) and freshman Amanda Kelly (Bethpage, N.Y.) each chipping in two points and combining for 12 rebounds.
