Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) and senior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) combined for 45 points as the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team pulled out a 74-70 overtime victory against Concordia (N.Y.) College on Friday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Lorenzen notched a double-double of 23 points (8-16 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 5-9 FT), 11 rebounds and four assists, while Ryan matched her career high with 22 points (9-16 FG, 3-8 3-FG, 1-4 FT) to go along with four helpers and three rebounds. Freshman Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) also reached double figures with 10 points (4-8 FG, 2-4 3-FG) and three boards.
Jessica Rosalbo led the Clippers with 18 points.
Trailing by two late in regulation, Southern New Hampshire jumped ahead when Lorenzen buried a 3-pointer to make it 57-56 with 2:13 to play. Lorenzen added a pair of free throws on the next possession to extend the lead to three with 1:23 on the clock. A Rosalbo layup made it a one-point game before Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) hit 1 of 2 at the line to give the Penmen some breathing room at 60-58 with 40 seconds left. Amiya Rankins then dropped in a layup to tie the game just seven seconds later, with SNHU missing a layup in the closing seconds to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, with the scored tied at 62, Dean scored five straight as part of a 7-0 run that gave Southern New Hampshire a 69-62 advantage with 2:30 left. The Clippers later used a 5-0 spurt to slash their deficit to one at 71-70 with 31 seconds on the clock, but sophomore Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.), who had not taken a single shot all game, buried a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game before Ryan sealed the win with 1 of 2 at the line.
Shelp netted seven points (1-2 FG, 5-6 FT), while dishing three assists and grabbing a pair of rebounds.
After Concordia scored the first four points of the contest, a basket from junior Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) sparked an 11-2 rush that featured 3-pointers from Ryan and Dean and gave Southern New Hampshire an 11-6 advantage just under midway through the opening quarter.
The lead was down to one when a 5-0 spurt – capped by another Ryan trey – ran the lead to a stanza-high six points at 18-12 with 1:16 remaining. Buckets from Hadiyah Black and Rosalbo closed the scoring and cut the SNHU lead to 18-16 heading to the second quarter.
After neither team scored for more than two minutes to begin the second frame, a Ryan layup set off a 12-4 run that spanned the entire quarter and expanded the Penmen lead to 30-20 at the break. Conrad and Lorenzen led the way with four points each during the stretch.
With the margin at 11 nearly four minutes into the third quarter, a Lorenzen triple gave SNHU its largest lead of the night at 41-27. Concordia responded with a balanced 16-4 rush that featured six different scorers and ended with the Penmen clinging to a 45-43 lead heading to the final frame.
Concordia extended the run to 22-6 early in the fourth quarter to grab a 49-47 lead with 7:15 to play. Two ties and two lead changes followed before Southern New Hampshire went back in front and the game eventually went to overtime.
Conrad tallied seven points (2-7 FG, 3-4 FT), three rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
