Graduate student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) earned a singles victory and the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team posted a pair of doubles wins, but the Penmen dropped a 6-3 decision to the second-ranked team in the East Region, New York Institute of Technology, on Saturday evening at the Allard Center.
Southern New Hampshire went into singles play with a 2-1 lead after a pair of big doubles triumphs. Sophomores Ricardo Marreiros (Portugal) and Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) tipped the 19th-ranked doubles team in the country in Nicolas Auruccio and Tomas Lieb, 9-7, at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Sebastian Ramirez (Merida, Venezuela) and freshman Max Georgeff (Toronto, Ontario) posted an 8-3 win against Alexandrew Martinez and Jamie Salvador at No. 3 doubles. The Penmen nearly swept doubles action as Fernandes and sophomores Miguel Marreiros (Portugal) led Jorge Gonzales Soler and Matej Selecky, 5-0, at No.1 singles before falling, 9-7.
Ricardo Marreiros then pushed Auruccio – the 33rd-ranked player in the country – to three sets at No. 1 singles before losing, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
With NYIT in front, 4-2, after taking No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Fernandes pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win against Lieb at No. 4 singles to keep the Penmen alive. The Bears would capture the final two singles matches, however, to take the match.
Notes:
-In addition to being ranked second in the ITA East Regional rankings, NYIT is 30th in the nation.
