Sophomore Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) scored 17 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team was defeated by Assumption College, 71-57, Wednesday evening at Laska Gymnasium.
Shelp was 7-for-14 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 at the line, to go along with three assists, two rebounds and two steals. Junior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) was also in double figures with 10 points (4-12 FG, 2-6 3-FG), two steals and two blocks.
Jaclyn Storey led Assumption with a game-high 21 points.
Assumption jumped out to a 13-3 lead over the first 2:44 of the contest on a trio of 3-pointers, including two from Storey, who contributed eight points during the stretch. The gap was eight over six minutes later when four straight points sliced the Penmen deficit in half at 17-13 with under a minute left, but the Greyhounds returned the favor and took a 21-13 lead at the end of one.
Three straight points from Storey to open the second stanza pushed the Assumption lead back to double digits at 24-13 less than a minute in. A Storey basket more than five minutes later sparked a 7-2 spurt that handed the Greyhounds their largest lead of the half at 35-20 with 2:04 remaining.
A three-point play with 19 ticks left from Shelp, combined with a block at the other end by Ryan, seemed to set the Penmen up to carry some momentum into the second half, but a 3-pointer by Kelly Carey off the ensuing inbounds play just before the buzzer stretched the Assumption advantage to 42-27 at the break.
After Assumption grabbed its largest lead of the game at 46-27 just over a minute-and-a-half in, a 3-pointer from sophomore Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) triggered a 10-2 run that featured five different scorers and trimmed the Penmen deficit to 48-37 with 2:32 left in the third. The Greyhounds would net the final five points of the period to open up a 53-37 advantage after three.
The lead went to 18 to open the final frame before a Ryan trey and back-to-back Shelp baskets pulled SNHU back within 11 at 55-44 with 7:00 to go. Assumption bumped its lead to 16, but four straight points from freshman Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) helped Southern New Hampshire build an 8-2 run that cut the lead down to single digits at 66-57 with under two minutes to go.
The late push was too little, however, as Assumption scored the final five points of the game to seal the victory.
Freshman Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) posted eight points (3-8 FG, 2-2 FT) and four rebounds, while sophomore Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) duplicated that effort with eight points (2-3 FG, 4-10 FT) and four boards of her own. Stinson finished with six points (2-3 FG, 2-2 3-FG) and three rebounds, with Camara registering six points (2-8 FG, 2-2 FT) and five rebounds. Senior Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) chipped in two points (1-2 FG), six boards and four steals.
