Sophomore Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) fired her second complete-game shutout in as many starts and did not surrender an earned run in 4.2 innings of relief to help the No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University softball team to a nonconference doubleheader split against No. 15 Caldwell University and Edinboro University. The Penmen fell in game one to the Cougars, 8-2, before topping the Fighting Scots in game two, 5-0.

Lavallee entered in the bottom of the second inning in Saturday's opener and surrendered just four hits and three unearned runs while striking out one, before going the distance in game two with seven punchouts and no walks to improve to 2-0 in the circle.

The Southern New Hampshire offense struck early and often against Edinboro, as it plated all-five of its runs in the first two innings before relying on Lavallee to keep the Fighting Scots off the board for the duration.

After Lavallee retired the side in order in the top of the first, the Penmen provided her with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) got Southern New Hampshire on the board when she took a 1-1 offering and deposited it over the wall in right-center. Freshman Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) followed with a walk before Lavallee drew a base on balls two batters later. After sophomore Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) singled to load the bases, junior Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) delivered a run scoring single through the left side to bring in Garczynski. Sophomore Katie Horiuchi (Livingston, N.J.) stepped in next and drilled a 2-2 pitch into right that allowed Lavallee to come in from third and make it 3-0.

Senior Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) led off the home half of the second with a base hit before Bolduc tagged a double to put runners on second and third with nobody out for Garczynski. She collected her second RBI of the year two pitches later with a single up the middle that scored Hannan and extended the Penmen lead to four. Senior Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) was next to the plate, and she provided an RBI fielder's choice to complete the game's scoring.

Bolduc went 3-for-4 against Edinboro with two runs scored and a run batted in, while Morrissey added two hits in three trips to the plate and an RBI.

Caldwell capitalized off three Southern New Hampshire errors and a five-run second inning to take game one. Kiahna Silva led off the home half of the second with a single before Lauren Frye drew a walk two batters later to put runners on first and second with one out. After Hannah Polak singled up the middle to load the bases, Amy Hickman stepped in next and delivered a two-run single that put the Cougars up by a pair. A walk to Caitlin McCready reloaded the bases for Brielle Reighn, who shot a bases clearing double down the leftfield line that provided Caldwell with all the offense it would need.

The score remained unchanged until the top of the fourth, when the Penmen were able to get on the board and trim the deficit to four. Horiuchi worked a one-out walk and moved up to second Perdigao's two out single. Hannan followed with a double down the line in left that brought home Horiuchi and made it a 5-1 game.

The Cougars responded in the next half inning with two unearned runs to extend its advantage to six. Hickman dropped a one-out bunt single before McCready reached on her second walk of the contest, which brought Reighn to the plate with two on and one out. A mishandled ball off her bat allowed Hickman to score, and advanced the McCready to third while Reighn scampered into second. Marisa Monasseri capped the inning's scoring with a sacrifice fly to left, giving Caldwell a 7-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Caruso launched a solo shot to left to draw the Penmen back within five, but it would be as close as they would come as the Cougars used a Southern New Hampshire error in the bottom of the sixth to score their eighth run and provide the final margin of scoring.

Junior Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) was saddled with the loss in game one after allowing five runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in 1.1 innings. Hannan was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI in the lid lifter. Caldwell's Amber Padilla upped her record to 2-0 with a complete game effort that saw her work around six hits and four walks to hold the Penmen to two runs.

Notes:
- Lavalle was extremely effective against Edinboro, needing just 75 pitches to navigate through seven innings. In 11.2 innings on Saturday, she threw 129 pitches and 96 strikes (74.4-percent).
- In her last three games, Hannan is 5-for-12 (.417) with three doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.
- Bolduc has three-hit efforts in two of her last three games, with five of the six hits going for extra bases.
