Sophomore Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) was 5-for-8 with a pair of runs batted in, and classmate Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) joined junior Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) with complete game victories in the circle as No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University swept Molloy College in nonconference softball action at the National Training Center Softball Complex in Clermont, Florida. The Penmen took game one by a final score of 5-2 before topping the Lions, 8-0, in the finale.
Perdigao turned in a 2-for-4 effort at the plate in the opener before going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in game two. Lavallee improved to 3-0 after allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six. Gubellini picked up her first win of the season with four-hit shutout in Sunday's second game that featured seven strikeouts and just four hits in six innings.
The Penmen found themselves in an early 2-0 hole in game one, as Tracey Balinskas homered to right-center in the bottom of the first and Olivia Banulski delivered a run scoring single in the home half of the third. It would be all the offense Molloy would receive in the first game as Lavallee settled in and surrendered only one hit in the ensuing four innings.
After the Lions tacked on their second run, Southern New Hampshire responded with a three-run fourth that put the game out of reach. Freshman Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) led off the frame with a double before senior Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) followed with a single. Lavallee stepped in next and drilled a base hit that plated Garczynski and put runners on the corners with nobody out. After Perdigao dropped a bunt single to load the bases, junior Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) connected on an RBI single to even the score at two apiece. The next batter, junior Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.), provided what proved to be the game-winning run with a groundout to second that brought in freshman pinch runner Dianna Jamgochian (Arlington, Mass.) from third.
The Penmen maintained the one-run advantage until to the top of the seventh when Lavallee, on the ninth pitch of her at-bat, launched a mammoth two-run shot to left that extended the lead to 5-2. In the bottom of the inning, Lavallee struck out two of the three batters she faced to secure the win.
In game two, Gubellini held Molloy hitless through the first three innings and racked up five strikeouts in the process while Southern New Hampshire built a 2-0 edge. The Penmen grabbed the lead in the home half of the second as Perdigao and Torsiello rapped back-to-back one out singles to put runners at first and third, and two batters later, freshman Katie Horiuchi (Livingston, N.J.) ripped a clutch two-out single into left that allowed Perdigao to score. After Gubellini struckout the side in the top of the third, senior Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) led off the bottom of the inning by drilling the first pitch she saw over the wall in left for her second long-ball of the season to double the SNHU advantage.
The Penmen ballooned their lead to five in the fourth with a three-run inning. Bolduc dug in with runners on first and third with one out and crushed another first pitch offering to the gap in left-center to make it 3-0 before a groundout from Garczynski brought in senior Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) with the game's fourth run and moved Bolduc up to third. Bolduc came in to score two pitches later when Caruso added an RBI single to cap the inning's scoring.
It would stay 5-0 until the sixth inning when Southern New Hampshire struck for an additional three runs to end the game. Bolduc connected on a one-out single to start things off before Garczynski walked on four pitches. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, and Caruso cashed in on the opportunity with a base hit just inside the third base line to drive in Bolduc. Two batters later Perdigao smacked a double off the bag at third that plated Garczynski and Caruso, and ended the game.
Bolduc was 4-for-4 in the finale with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Caruso notched her second straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 outing that followed a 3-for-4 performance in game one. Lavallee also collected three hits in four trips to the plate in the opening game to go along with three runs batted in, a run scored and a home run.
