Junior Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) and sophomore Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) tallied a pair of hits on Tuesday, but the No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University softball team combined for nine hits and one run, and was swept by Wayne State University of Michigan and No. 27 Florida Institute of Technology. The Penmen fell in the opener to the Warriors by a score of 4-1 before the Panthers took the finale, 5-0.
Morrissey and Perdigao went 1-for-3 in game one and duplicated their performances in game two to finish 2-for-6 on the afternoon. Senior Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in the lone Southern New Hampshire run of the day as part of a 1-for-3 showing against Wayne St.
Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in game one until the bottom half of the fourth, when Wayne St. pushed across all-four of its runs. Jade McGarr led off with a bunt single and moved up to second on a throwing error before Kristen Lucas plated her with a base hit up the middle. Emily Cava followed with a single, and a mishandled bunt off the bat of Hannah McClounie brought in Lucas while also advancing Cava to third. Kylee Barrett stepped in next and delivered a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0, and after moving up to second on the sac fly and stealing third, McClounie crossed the plate two batters later on Shelby Fridline's single to right center.
The Penmen cut into the deficit in the next half inning on an RBI single from Bolduc. After Morrissey started things off with a base knock to right, sophomore Katie Horiuchi (Livingston, N.J.) executed a sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner Dianna Jamgochian (Arlington, Mass.) into scoring position. Two batters later, Bolduc tagged a 1-1 offering into center and Jamgochian cruised in to trim the Warriors' advantage to 4-1.
It would be as close as Southern New Hampshire would get, as the Penmen managed just one base runner in their final two at-bats. Sophomore Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) suffered her first setback in the circle for SNHU after allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout. Senior Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) finished 1-for-3 and Horiuchi was 1-for-1 with a double to account for the remaining SNHU hits.
Cava and Fridline paced the Wayne State offense with 2-for-3 performances in support of Mackenzie Boehler, who scattered five hits in a complete-game effort.
After Southern New Hampshire went hitless in the top half of the first of game two, Florida Tech grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. Elaine Brown reached on a fielder's choice before swiping second and third. With two away, Krista Patterson blooped a single into shallow left to plate Brown and the game's first run.
The Panthers built on their lead with a four-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Patterson and Nicole Shinsky reached with one away and after moving up to second and third with two down, five consecutive Florida Tech hitters reached base. Hailey Leonard delivered a single to center to drive in Shinsky before Ashley Montion connected on a two-run double to left, making it a 4-0 ballgame. After Kaitlin Buccholz picked up a base hit through the left side, a hit-by-pitch and back-to-back walks forced in the fifth run of game two.
Junior Devan Rabidou (Ashland, Mass.) reached base twice against Florida Tech after going 1-for-2 with a walk. Classmate Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) picked up a hit as well and finished 1-for-3 in game two. Junior Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) went the distance versus the Panthers and allowed five runs, six hits and two walks while striking out one.
Buchholz led the Florida Tech offense with two hits in three trips, while Montion drove in a pair of runs. Rachel Pence earned the victory with a complete-game shutout that featured five strikeouts and just four hits allowed.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire left 11 runners on base in the doubleheader, while Wayne St. and Florida Tech combined to leave seven.
- The Penmen were shutout for the first time this season and just the second time in their last 18 regular season games.
